Watched some old BBQ Pittmasters episodes today on tv and all you ever saw was Mixon, supposedly this BBQ deity, bragging about his food, cussing to others about how good he was, then placing 40the and 70th place at the competitions, then complaining about the jusdges.

I only saw about 3 episodes, but he never won anything of any significance, and you see the reviews of his Jacks Old South restaurant, and many of them talk about how disappointed they were. Then his other restaurant ventures haven't gone well either, when he's tried to open places across the country.

I don't know that much about the BBQ circuit, but is this guy a fraud??? Or is he just a Muhammad Ali type marketer of "if you say it enough, people will believe you."

I know he shows up at podunk bbq contests (leakesville ms, population 898) with his high dollar rig and high dollar meat to place for bigger contests.

A friend of mine said this is why he got out of competition bbq.

So, essentially he's a major leaguer, going to Single A to pad his stats???

I'm als not that familiar with BBQ competitions, but do they not supply the same meats for all contestants?

I can't stand the guy when he's judging these BBQ cook-offs. He comes off like a pompous SOB most of the time.

He comes off like one of those "Don't you know who I am?" types.

I’ve got family in Cordele, Ga which is close to where Jacks sold South is located and have tried it. Food is not good.
At contests, evidentaly they know going in what to bring or even though the meat is supplied, the contestants may speculate and bring their own. There’s some high dollar brisket available I’ve seen. They still have to cook it but it’s a different flavor the contests are looking for, I’m told it’s sweeter. Don’t know first hand, never been to one, but have spoken with a competitive chef on the circuit.
And Myron’s mouth gets old quickly

It is his schtick. However, he is a 4 time grand champion at Memphis in May and a world bar bq hall of famer.

I have a friend that competes on the circuit some, and he say's Myron is a world class a-hole. I think what Myron projects on TV confirms that opinion.

I think he consistently does well at Memphis in May, where I met him last year. He was a dick

I watched the entire first season of BBQ Pitmasters. It looked like to me that Mixon's strength was the type of competition where the judges showed up to each individual BBQ team's set up to eat.

Mixon is a great talker, knows all the right things to say, and has a first class setup. All of this impresses the judges way more than the food. He also outshines most of the other competitors in this type of competition because they can't compete with his mouth and his rig.

I also call foul with these water smokers like Mixon uses. They are basically steam/smoking their food, which maintains moisture in the meat. Let them use a BGE and see how they do.

My favorite was always Johnny Trigg.

While flipping channels, I sometimes run across this BS scripted show. I'd as soon watch "rasslin" if I wanted to lose brain cells.

I read that in 2015 or 16 he actually sued his business partners in some nyc restaurant and the Miami and Chicago ventures both failed miserably. Clearly he knows how to manipulate judges at some competitions, but his his actual restaurant food is crap.

Honestly, I wouldn't buy his cookbook either... I learned more about BBQ from Franklin's web series and cookbook than anywhere else.

I also know great southern BBQ translates to metro, out of area restaurants areas if it's good enough.

Two brothers from my hometown in Arkansas actually started and own Rolling Smoke BBQ in Las Vegas... It's supposedly one of the most popular restaurants in the city....and I tell Ya.... They did nothing but totally rip off a great, famous local spot in our hometown... And it worked brilliantly.

From the BBQ shows he looks like he is tough to take for more than 20 minutes. His cussin seems forced and always out of place.

He's the Trump of BBQ....all talk and a complete a-hole who pushes his weight around, preying on people with actual manners and a conscience.

He was a judge on one of the Chopped BBQ editions and the way they treated him like some BBQ god, and his reaction to being treated that way, was really uncomfortable to watch.

Deadspin sent Drew Magary and another guy (Albert Burneko) down to Myron's house for a short 15-20 min web segment. If you've ever read Drew's stuff or seen him in interviews, he's about the most down-to-earth guy you can imagine. The tension between these 3 guys during this video short was really telling. The way Drew was acting you could tell this entire trip had been a disaster having to deal with Mixon. The only time the guy was even semi-friendly was when he was showing off his trophy collection.

Come on dude. I agree that he appears to be an a-hole but his resume is certainly more than just talk. As for the Trump comment, building a Billion dollar brand =/= all talk.
