The evolution of Point and Shoot cameras

Just when I thought Point-and-Shoot cameras were dead, Canon comes out with this handy little beauty, the SX-740HS with a 20.3Mp sensor, 4K video at 30fps and a 40X optical zoom (equivalent to 24mm to 960mm zoom lens).
Only $399 retail. Think I'll get one for my kids and wife to use. My 5D Mark IV intimidates them.
Press release
YouTube (annoying audio, though)

About damn time
But really, who made that YouTube video?

I guess that was kind of my question..Who would pay $400 for essentially a bulky phone on top of carrying a bulky phone that takes almost equivalent pictures
I'd honestly like to see it compared to some phones pictures

I think you can boil it down to what you give up with a phone. Most high quality phones max out at 27mm optical, although iPhone X has both a 28mm and 56mm lens. After that, it's noisy digital zoom. On this PAS camera it can extend to almost 1000mm optical focal length and macro shooting as close as 0.4". I don't believe you can do that with a phone, yet.
So I suppose it's what you're willing to live with and if you are the creative type that wants close up shots from a distance that are sharp with all the resolution, or are okay with compromising on quality.

I'd rather have a great camera with cell service for emails/text

FWIW the Sony RX100 line has been awesome for a while, albeit at a higher price than that

What he's saying in a nice way is that the camera in your phone doesn't compare favorably at all to the camera he posted. It's vastly superior in every way that matters.
It's a camera. It's made to take great pictures. People that use cameras like that don't give a shite whether it can send and receive an email.

A big part of the video seems to revolve around the way it is easily connectable..I get what OP is saying, but the target audience isn't anyone in that video

apologies..welcome to 2018 where people don't want to carry a phone and a camera..I simply asked what the actual use would be these days and how it compared..I'd be willing to bet you couldn't pick between a real camera and a cell cameras picks these days

I think most people would be able to tell if you took pictures of the same thing. Especially in low light or from a distance
Sure cell phone cameras are good enough, but no cellphone is coming close in quality. It's a physical size problem that cellphones can't solve without being larger.

Nice pictures.
Now without moving your shooting location, zoom in on a tree branch with your cell phone.

I'm all about video with the added bonus of good photos.
Point and shoots have been there for a while but not at this price point. I'm considering getting this as a backup to my a7s2 since my backup now is only 1080p.
