Wayne Rooney has waded in on the Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi debate following his move to the MLS, and given a rather surprising response.

Rooney has been conducting a series of interviews since completing his switch from his boyhood club Everton to DC United, and was asked by online podcast Barstool Sports to name the greatest ever.

Without a moment of hesitation Rooney's decision was made, instantly replying back to the hosts: 'Messi.'

The speed of Rooney's response came as a shock to those in the studio, with replies of 'oh, that was quick!' coming back at the former England captain.

Offering an explanation however, Rooney admitted no other player can come close to what Messi does with a football.

'They're both probably the best two players to ever play the game, I just think Messi is, in my eyes, the greatest ever.'

I hate the Argentine FA for not hiring better managers for these last two World Cups.

He is really not though. Christiano has been the better player for a while now. Having a midfield of iniesta, xavi, and busquets made Messi look like a god.

And having the best midfield on the planet the past four years doesn't make Ronaldo look good?

Messi's playmaking abilities have become more important as Xavi and Iniesta have given way to less able midfielders. If Messi didn't score a goal next year, he'd still be the best playmaker in the world by a wide margin. His ability to create goals, drop into deep-lying positions to move the ball, and to continue to be able to finish the way he does is amazing.

Yes. Modric, Kroos, and casemiro are damned good but an argument could be made that Iniesta, Xavi and busquets are all in the top 10 midfielders of all time.

I think if you switch Ronaldo on those Barca teams and put Messi on Portugal instead of Argentina that Ronaldo would have twice the CL wins and a World Cup, and Messi would have only 2-3. CL wins.

Picking between the two is highly speculative and just a matter of opinion though.

ETA - no I’m not fixing my typos, I’m drunk deal with it.

Messi is the better dribbler, the better passer, the better finisher.

Messi hasn't won a single trophy internationally.

Ronaldo has done it all. 2 huge leagues, soon to be 3 and won the fricking Euros with a trash Portugal squad. The dude has 4 champions league trophies with 2 freaking teams. He's scored in 3 freaking champions league finals. Also has close to 20 more goals overall.

Messi is amazing, but there is no question in my mind who firmly is the GOAT and I don't even like Crissy.

His career has been flat out unmatchable and I don't see how you can debate it from a pure achievement standpoint.

Scoring Maradona goals and dribbling around everyone doesn't win you the GOAT.

Congrats on playing for multiple teams.

Ah, yes. When they finished 3rd in their group behind Hungary and Iceland. Then beat Croatia, Poland, and Wales to get to the finals. Then he got hurt in the 8th minute against France and came out. What an accomplishment.

Wut?

Remind me what Messi has done again internationally other than miss penalties?

He made his shootout attempt against Chile in the 2015 Copa America final, but the rest of his team missed. Made the 2014 World Cup final.

Ronaldo was barely on the field long enough to make a lap in the Euro final.

Team accomplishments are terrible ways of judging individuals. Even then, it's not like Messi's team hasn't been in a position to win internationally. His teams have been terrible, and still made it to three straight international finals. I suppose Ronaldo should be thanking Eder for scoring a great goal in a final in which Ronaldo barely played a part, as that's what gives Ronaldo the edge over Messi, according to your metric.

Argentina is terrible?

It's filled with world class players and has been his whole career. Get real.

Sure they're a trainwreck but Portugal has been similar which much less overall talent recently.
