I’d say the Garmin Forerunner series is great and pretty easy to use for beginners. The Garmin desktop interface/app are user friendly as well. I have the Forerunner 245 and love it. There are cheaper and more expensive versions, depending on what you want.

I second TigeRoots on the Garmin consideration. There's no fee to use their phone app or desktop site, and unlike some other popular fitness trackers Garmin devices use built-in GPS so you don't need to bring your phone with you. Right now the Garmin 45 is $150, which is cheaper than the 35 their base watch.

Thanks for the info on the watches and I’m leaning towards a Garmin 245 music. I’ve decided to set milestones for myself and a watch will be after my first five mile run. I was going to wait to buy new shoes, but got some Brooks Revel shoes for $35 on clearance at academy for my first pair. I’ve only been at it for a little over two weeks, and I ran 3 miles today at a 9:44 average so not that far off (my pace is all out of whack).
