nor does it take into account how much safer a car seat is when used correctly regardless of which direction it faces (which is hard to quantify in national statistics because up to 90% are used incorrectly;

Pretty sure that’s crap. I thought the hospital checks the car seat & if it isn’t installed properly they make you go to local fire station or wherever to have it correctly installed.
I could be wrong

You are. Nobody checks that outside of, "Hey do you know how to install the car seat?"

I'm assuming you're a man. You've seen other men. I'm a man. How often you think we're letting someone tell us how to do something?

Yep

I may be thinking that hospital staff may refuse to check it so if something happens they can’t be held liable

Idk, I remember friends panicking about if the seat was right before their 1st kid was born

Those are called responsible adults, like myself. Think about how many people having kids aren't responsible adults and you begin to see why it's so easy for car seats to be installed correctly.

Edit: incorrectly

When I worked mother/baby we just had to verify they had a carseat. For legal reasons we could not install the carseat for them. If they were unsure how to install...they had to have it checked on their own(fire department, etc).

When I worked at OLOL peds we had a nurse that was specially certified for carseat teaching. She ran the hospital carseat program and she could do carseat checks.

Only thing I could do was tell the parents they had to have a carseat for discharge.

One experience I will never forget with a carseat.

Took care of a baby that had been in a car accident. Was in a carseat...that wasn't fricking buckled in. So the baby in the carseat flew through the windshield and was found several feet away from the car by police.

The amazing thing..baby had a small very minor skull fracture...but was going to be ok. Everyone was amazed the child didn't have more serious injuries.

Day of discharge I'm going over the discharge paperwork with mother and the grandmother. They had been told since admission that the old carseat had to be thrown away and a new one bought. I mean...the carseat had flown through the windshield, through the air and crashed onto the ground...it should be a given this needed to be replaced. I ask them about the carseat they bought....they look at me dumbly and tell me they didn't buy one. I told them they had to buy one. They said they might get a new one later on. They were gonna just take the baby home in the old one they had salvaged from the scene of the crash.

A baby with a skull fracture from being in a car accident.

I told them they couldn't be discharged until they got a carseat. That they had to physically show me the carseat before they installed it. Once they saw I was serious...they made some phone calls and a relative showed up with a brand new carseat.

This is a prime example of what I was talking about, LSUJML. I'm sure nurse can back me up in saying this is much more common than people think.

I think all of mine got out around 5-6 when the normal shoulder belt wouldn’t be running across their necks.

But I really dgaf if people keep their kids in them until their 25 because it has no effect on me.
