i enjoyed it. i haven't read the book or anything so i looked at this as a popcorn flick and it was immensely enjoyable for the nostalgia alone.
i grew up in the late 1970s/early 1980s so i was front and center for the atari 2600 and colecovision revolution and there was so much eye candy in this movie i'm going to have to watch it a few more times i think.
my 3yo is absolutely in love with the iron giant so i brought him in for a few minutes to watch him battle megazilla.
two thumbs up! i love it when a movie does this much research into the history of video games, etc. to get everything right.

I liked it when a crowd of 200+ people got scared and backed down because one guy pulled out a glock.

Damn, completely skipped over that.
I'm not one of those types to down movies when the book is better...the movie is good but the book is great

well to be honest it was a bunch of poor, beat down trailer-trash and nobody felt like taking a bullet.

It was a very meh movie.
Be warned the book is very poorly written, but the plot is pretty good.

Unless there are books that have very specific scenes that I want to see transcribed over to the movie/tv screen, then I typically don't mind if the movie deviates from the book. This is a good example. I enjoyed the overall premise of the book, and I enjoyed the movie's version of that premise.
I personally wouldn't have wanted to see him play Joust, or Pac-Man in the movie, but it was great to visualize in my head as I read it. If every movie was a scene-for-scene rehash of its book counterpart, then that would get fairly boring.

My big complaint was putting Sorrento in a Cyborg Clark Kent avatar and not having the Iron Giant and Cyborg Superman face off.

I think they did a fun job of reinventing the key quest and dividing the essence of each key trial into 3 separate trials. The "real" game being the race.
The movie segment being it's own beast.
And the last challenge being atari for the arcade segment.
Looking forward to watching it again.

I loved all the 80s Easter eggs in this movie.
I bet you can watch it several times and catch ones you haven’t noticed before.

also the close up of the iron giant's face falling after having his fingers shot off would have been much better if a few seconds later he came flying out of the lava on his feet jets instead of the dumb terminator thumbs-up. iron giant is too much of a badass to be lost to the lava. take him out in a different way.

honestly i'd have to pause it every 2 seconds the way all that stuff comes pouring out of the screen at you.

Some of the changes took the soul out of the book though. The most interesting change was completely discarded at the end. WTF was the Halliday avatar? Halliday is dead, but this thing was something else besides a generic NPC. It's like hey I'm some crazy AI, but bye bitches, my point in the movie is just to give you stuff.
The Tuesday and Thursday turning off of the Oasis change was absolutely retarded to try appease parents not wanting their kids to play video games all the time. Someone else would just build a competitor that was open 24/7. I mean this is the entire world's everything, you go to school there, you do all your business there, and now you are turning it off two damn days of the week, that's just nonsense....
The race part wasn't done by someone who plays racing games. The first race some troll would of tried to gone backwards to wreck everyone.

Disagreed with pretty much everything.

How so?
Weird AI Halliday thing isn't interesting?
You don't think turning off the OASIS on Tuesdays and Thursdays is an absolutely idioctic decision?
You really honestly believe some troll wouldn't do it well before 5 years?
