It was the National Sports Festival not the Special Olympics.

It wasn't built for the Special Olympics. it was built for the Olympic Sports Fest, circa 1984.

This. But it was 1985 and I think it was called the National Sports Festival back then.

Fun fact - Tonya Harding competed in it, my brother got her autograph.

Eta it was the sports festival. I worked as a ball kid at the soccer games at Olympia Stadium. When the ball went out of bounds it was my job to go get it and give it back to one of the players. I remember talking to Steve Sharp. He was a good player.

It was 1985. I remember because I was in high school then and had a t-shirt from it.

The LSU natatorium was built for the festival too.
