Well, if we look at the history of the states (or really that point in time way back when), independence day was a day to celebrate in gaining independence from the Brits. But soon after, my ancestors had to deal with a new harsh reality.

Ok, but this quote from your original post implies that slavery began after July 4, 1776, and that, quite obviously, is false. That was the reason for my question.

Slavery existed long before and long after the 4th of July. Should we not celebrate anything that happened during slavery?
