It's a safety issue more than a wake issue. Passing somebody at 40mph when you have to pass close is dangerous as hell. Lay it down and idle past. If I have to get closer than about 40 yards I'm idling and I expect others to do the same
40 yards?
It would take you 2 hours to get from one end of Spring bayou to the other.

Well take 2 hours or go another way. If you hit something hauling arse next to their boat you might end up in their boat with them. It's dangerous and stupid.
