The wife and I are extremely interested in doing this. I’ve heard from others that once you charter your own private Cat yacht, there is no going back to another type of island vacation.

Here’s the basics.

Charter a private 40+ foot catamaran yacht. Based research I would like a 52-56 footer with 4 rooms. This will sleep up to 8, not including the 2+ crew.

All inclusive including meals & alcohol. The crew has at least one chef on board, many of which have been formally trained and fell in love with the lifestyle of living on the boat. The boats Ive seen all take advantage of the local cuisine and will cook what is caught during the trip.

Water jets, a 25-40 hp dinghy, scuba, and paddle boards are typical water sports that are available. All are included from what I’ve seen except Scuba, which is normally extra.

The boat spends the week sailing and island hopping. It’s your trip you direct the captain where to go and what to do.

What do you think? Is this the pinnacle of vacationing the islands?

Any personal experiences?

Only if you tell them to anchor down in White Bay of JvD and you get hammered drinking painkillers.

I’m friends with the owner of a 76’ with 5 rooms. He’s got a chef on board, master diver, etc etc. It’s incredible.

It’s about $40k a week.

Any idea what 7 days on his 76’ costs? I would imagine 35-40k.

Just saw your post.... I was pretty spot on. Too expensive for my blood for just the family, but would be reasonable split with a few couples.

It’s a great trip but a lot of those islands are still fricked from storms

You’d be right. Plus tip which I think is $500 per cabin per night.

My price is just the tip for the crew

I just returned from 10 days sailing in the BVI and will post my thoughts when I have more time.

I would not get a chef to cook every meal. There are plenty of great restaurants on the islands and they need our support and our dollars so spread them around.

How many stay on it?

For $12k/couple for a week, I could definitely see the value for something like that, even if it's a bucket list type thing for most of us.

You don’t have to spend $40k for a week on a luxury yacht with 2+ crew to have the trip of a lifetime. Of course if you want to ball hard go for it. I think a captain should be all you need. I agree on not needing a chef. You’re going to want to get off the boat at night every once in a while and you can take turns cooking the other nights. We cooked lobster that we caught in Anegada one night and bbq most other nights using provisions supplied at the beginning of the trip.
We bareboat using Voyage Charters out of Tortola. They offer captain only charters and have a wide range of boats. If you look into that, you can get a better idea of rates, boats, provisions, etc.
One piece of advice in selecting a boat is not to worry too much about the cabins. You will be spending most of your time on deck.
Haven’t been back since the storm, so can’t offer any advice on the effects. There are sailing forums if you google bvi charter forum. They can offer insight as can vabuckeye.

We chartered a 48' from Marine Max in 2016 out of Tortola. There was 6 couples so we had 2 catamarans. It was the best trip, and we plan to go back in 2019. We are lucky because we live at the beach and most are comfortable with being a captain. We just made sure we were anchored before the party began. If that wasn't the case, I definitely would have wanted a captain. A chef would have been a waste of money for us. When you leave Soggy Dollar and Willey T's you don't really care what you eat. We grilled on the boat most nights, but wanted to eat out a few nights. It is the most amazing trip!! Have fun

The company we use charters out some Otterbox cats. Took a tour of several of their boats. The company still has plenty of boats to charter and if you plan in advance, which looks like he is doing, there shouldn’t be a problem.

The Moorings is operating at about 40% of normal capacity right now. They expect to be back to 100% capacity next season and the word is that they are already nearly 100% booked.

The images of the moorings boats right after the storm looked like they were hit hard. Good they’ll be back by next season.
