My brother in law works for a major IOC in the Permian. Says truckers hauling tankers there are making doctor salaries.

It's not coming anytime soon. Machines break down. Just that alone is a huge obstacle to fully automated trucks.

Yes. And drivers who own their trucks make considerably more than that with the right freight. I just haul refrigerated and gross at $228K. Other guys who haul more sensitive things make considerably more.

There is a shortage of truckers because of drug testing. The moment insurance companies sign off on weed being ok, there will be no shortage of truckers
This has been the case for at least 25 years

Dont see that happening.

Hence the supply of truck drivers will continue to be an issue.
Weed legalization nationally and the insurance industry are going to have a reckoning one day. Libs On the state level are going to pressure carriers to exclude weed

Insurance companies aren't going to sign off on that. It's too much of a liability and a safety issue.
The biggest reason there's a shortage is because of stagnant pay for drivers. All other costs in the industry have gone up but driver pay is lagging behind.
The increased regulations and shitty treatment are also driving people away. Many see the pay flat lining and just don't think it's worth it anymore.

What do you net?

Self driving trucks will be here in less than 10 years

There is no shortage of truck drivers in Mississippi.
Posted on 7/1/18 at 10:19 pm to HailHailtoMichigan!
Also the new electronic logging requirements that just took effect, passed under Obama, are fricking ridiculous and will cause a massive hike in shipping rates and backlog due to truckers having to stop for 10 consecutive hours for rest.

It is bad right now. Worst I have ever seen in 22 years in my industry. Hire 10 a month and retain 2 after 3-4 months. Net gain of 8-10 over four months when we need 40. Everybody up and down the supply chain is in the same boat.

I’m a flatbed truck driver, 28 (millennial) and no there won’t be self driving trucks in 10 years. Maybe 25-30 years from now...
Even then, you’ll still need a driver inside the truck in case shite hits the fan.
I make around 75k a year, pay is on the up swing for sure.

I net about 55% after all expenses and taxes.

You definitely need high levels of testosterone to sit behind the wheel of a truck all day. Definitely.
And if they continue to raise wages, they will become more competitive.
This is a non story.
Clearly you haven't seen "Over the Top"

"Increasing consumer pricing" is such an odd way to view the economy. Things should be worth what they are worth relative to other goods and services. This constantly changes.

If you are unable to hire quality applicants and retain them there is one and only one reason, the pay is not adequate.
Pay one dollar an hour over roughneck wages and all the drivers one could ever need would be at the doorstep the next morning, how do you think the oilfield crews up so fast?
It is all about the money today, pensions are a thing of the past and 401k's are transferable meaning no more loyalty from either side, employers who do not grasp that will never keep good employees.

Yup. And when oil prices are high, the value of a roughneck increases. When oil prices are low, it decreases. The trucking industry's inability to adapt to the laws of supply and demand is no one's fault except the trucking companies.

There is a little bit more to it with drivers.
First of all, the industry operates by the mile and drivers get paid by the mile
. The work isn't hard (Flat bed can be a little bit), but it requires discipline and time management. Young people aren't good at either one.
Also, it requires a person to be away from home a lot, and problems with wives, girlfriends, kids eat at them.
When they get home, they want to stay there instead of getting back to work.
Then some, they just aren't focused, end up in an accident quickly, or get too many violations.
More pay, doesn't really fix those problems in fact, sometimes, it makes them worse.
When young undisciplined people have too much money in their pockets, they want to go spend it.
That's why the truck stops and casinos are so connected.
