Not sure how that makes it not-dumb.

Within the context of the movie, the boys are good, practiced shots. I don't think that mantra makes a lot of sense to them at that point.

I see what y'all are saying...

I think it's simply something to keep them focused as they kill people instead of thinking about killing people. It's kind of a fricked up scene when you think about how easily they do it.

They're good practiced shots shooting at targets and game. Shooting men who shoot back is much more stressful and dangerous. Their Dad was steadying them for the chaos and killing to come by reminding them of what's the simple first principle of aiming, what's true, and what's familiar.

It’s highly doubtful the boys ever fired at people before and their father knew they would be very nervous. He reminded them they still need to take their time and aim well, bullets don’t magically find their target.

It's what coaches/teachers/fathers do. It's just a reminder, in a situation where it's importance can't be stressed enough.
