The second Senegal Goal - Ref to blame?

Officials Under Fire As Senegal Player Waved On Seconds Before Scoring
This goal just baffled me. First of all, I didn't know that the AR could just wave a player onto the field in the middle of play if he had previously come off with an injury. I'd always thought you had to wait for a dead ball and to be whistled onto the field by the ref. At least that how it was growing up and in high school. This AR's poor judgment drastically changed a game. I don't think it's right to allow a player to essentially sneak back onto the field and take advantage of the fact that the defense doesn't know he's back.

No. Just unfortunate.
The ball was 20 yards from Senegal's goal when he was waved on. The defense had to have known he could come on at any time. The defender even looked his way, but it's like he saw right through him and didn't register him being there. Was also a shitty back pass.

The head ref is the one who ultimately gave him permission.

The 4th official was in communication with the center, and the center waved him on.

It was not great officiating, but this is also a case why generally it's bad to just hoof the ball back toward your GK.

I will say that’s the kind of goal I would expect to see scored against us in CONCACAF qualifying.

The ref has no idea that back pass was going to be made and I don’t blame him at all. No referee would have had any reason to assume a backpass there would happen. Especially one that shitty

The ball was in the air, waiting to be headed by another Senegal player when he was waved on. It doesn't seem fair to wave a player on in a situation like that.

I’ve concluded it was a fair goal but I really don’t like it. I also don’t completely fault the Poland guy for not realizing the guy had been waved on before he passed it backwards. I agree the Senegal player did nothing wrong.

The ball was in Senegal's defensive third. How is that not fair?

Wouldn’t it be better if they couldn’t enter between the ball and their goal? Seems like an easy fix for this sort of thing.

If he's at midfield, you're also keeping him from helping the team on defense. shite, that would encourage a team to hurt opposing players if it meant they could get an advantage for as long as they can keep the ball in their attacking third.

I mean, Senegal didn't really even have possession.

It looked like a lacrosse or hockey line change

Or it would stop players from laying on the ground pretending to be hurt when 95% of the time they are fine

But you're still punishing the ones that do need that extra minute.

Nobody had possession. That’s the problem. A player should be waved on when it’s reasonably sure that the act of him coming on won’t give his team some huge advantage. IMO if the ball is up for grabs in the air, that’s not a good time. A good time would be when the opposing team has solid possession not near where he comes into the field. Is there an official rule or guidance to refs on this?

quote:It was reasonably sure that the act of him coming on wouldn't give his team some huge advantage as long as the defender didn't make a horrendous pass back to the keeper and the other defender in the area was paying any attention. The only reason this is at all controversial, is because Poland completely fricked up. It's not like he was able to join in on a 3-on-2 break.
