Warner Bros. Shifts DC Strategy Amid Executive Change-Up

Then there are two potential Joker features — one to star Jared Leto, who played the character in 2016's Suicide Squad, and another, starring Joaquin Phoenix, that Todd Phillips will direct. Phillips' movie, expected to begin shooting in the fall, is budgeted at about $55 million, a fraction of most superhero pics, and may be launched under a new label that could be branded with a name like "DC Dark" or "DC Black."
quote:
the other DC movies are leaving behind the dark and brooding palette. The Flash, which will finally begin production in early 2019 with Ezra Miller starring, has abandoned the somber themes it had been expected to tackle. The film now has the Game Night team of John Francis Daly and Jonathan Goldstein on board, and it's looking to Back to the Future as a touchstone.

The big question mark going forward is the future of Batman. Writer-director Matt Reeves turned in the first act of a new screenplay during the Memorial Day weekend. It's said to focus on a young caped crusader, and while the studio would not comment, it's unlikely that Ben Affleck, who has played Batman in three features, will again don the cowl.
quote:
One thing the exec will not be doing is convening a writers room, say insiders. Certain studios have taken that tack, such as Paramount and Hasbro with their toy-based properties, Universal with its monster universe, and Legendary with its creature features. “Walter is philosophically opposed to that approach," says one insider.

My favorite part:
They tied themselves to a release schedule and when things went south they stuck to the schedule. If this guy is able to move release dates around in order to get a better product out, more power to him.
quote:
Hamada and his boss Toby Emmerich, sources say, also are not looking to date upcoming titles in advance, something they're convinced has bedeviled the DC movies since 2013's Man of Steel. "Walter has a specific design for the universe," says one insider familiar with his thinking. "He has a plan."

quote:I never understood this. Obviously they weren't thinking big picture because it would have been worth it to extend production on a single film and lose a little money on an okay product than ruin 3 films in a row because schedule trumps all.

They have most of the good actors in place, they just needed to replace Affleck. They need to do a couple of solo outings before the next Justice League, build the characters. Let Aquaman do his own thing in his movie without trying to connect it with Superman or any other character.
Same with Flash, WW and Superman. Let there be a couple of Batman flicks and at least one solo for each of the others.

Would be nice if they used Flash to fix some of the major problems (and to explain a new Batman actor)

I've loved Affleck as Batman. Finally brought a menacing, physical presence to the character it's never had. But I do agree starting your universe with an aging Bruce Wayne locked themselves into a corner.

I think that they were looking at the promotional benefits (and showing investors that they were being aggressive) of laying out a long term plan. Once those plans were tied to quarterly and annual budgets they dug in their heels and went with it.
It's ridiculous to announce films for an entire decade. You have no idea what will work and will need to be fast-tracked for a sequel.
Right now they have Aquaman, Shazam, and WW2 in production. They shouldn't announce Flash's release year until they're close to filming in the Fall.

I wish they'd leave older Batman and focus on introducing and building Dick Grayson as Robin who eventually becomes Nightwing and then give us and Under the Red Hood live action done right.
An older Batman means an older Joker. And an older Joker could be played live action on screen by Mark Hamil. A fan boy can dream

I think DC screwed up with the timing of the launch of their whole universe. They either should have been sharp enough to read the tea leaves after Marvel launched Iron Man and immediately got in on the wave; or, sat it out until the Marvelverse had run its course and then jumped in.Instead, they got in the game (Man of Steel, 2013) while Marvel was reaching it's peak and their storyline was in mid-stream. They were always going to be the "day late, dollar short" crowd beginning when they did.

Is their new strategy "Make movies that don't suck?"

Wonder Woman notwithstanding, he movies themselves have been a hot mess. Affleck as Batman, however, as well as the rest of the casting, were good choices. IMO. At least for the heroes.
And they need to simply pretend that SS never even existed... never happened... nothing.

Starting with MOS was fine. The issue is they freaked out by the BO results and quickly moved ahead to bring in Batman. It was ridiculous. Just stay the course.

SS as a concept is good.
SS as it was executed was a clusterfrick.
One- You have to figure out whether you are going to build your characters through the film or through a prequel, be it a home release, a TV special, heavily hyped vignettes to be aired during sweeps, etc.
If your characters are already established going in, you don’t have to waste screen time building them.
Two - In direct relation to the above, they let the flashbacks with Joker and Harley overshadow the rest of the movie, for good or bad. If you have Joker in a flashback, have him return as the villain in the third act.
Three - Choose your villain well.
Enchantress being the villain was a hot mess for a variety of reasons. She’s the kind of villain you set up for a sequel by having her on the squad and showing that June Moone is sane and Enchantress is not, with Enchantress gaining more strength the longer she is out.
A good starter villain would be The Jihad, which was a group of super villain terrorists for hire based out of Qurac. Rename them and change up their sponsor but keep the idea of meta human terrorists for hire, have them kill a bunch of people, then send the squad into their base to kill them and the machines and staff used to create them.
It saves having to explain why Enchantress has the MacGuffin and how she’s going to pull a Devil’s Advocate and frick her brother to create the antichrist.

But they really couldn't. They were in the middle of a highly successful batman trilogy that had already established itself in a universe that would seem unlikely for anyone to exist other than batman. They actually did greenlight a justice league movie around this time (2007 or 2008). With a totally different batman. They scraped it when they realized it would confuse people.
In a lot of ways, that trilogy was bittersweet for them. By 2012 they were already way behind the 8ball and were too focused on pushing out movies instead of being patient and building a universe.

Feels like a Daniel Craig-007 type situation. I don’t see how it would be possible to not have him play Batman atleast 1 more time unless they decide to blow up the entire thing.
Unless this is just worded wrong and they mean he won’t don the cowl for the reeves film

They recognize the problem, and are taking steps to correct it.
gotta respect that

The Batman fanboys dismissed Iron Man as a light movie while The Dark Knight was something with substance back in 08.
