BR absolutely needs a 200 person venue that has atmosphere, a bar, creative/interesting diverse booking with a decent enough location.
This is the Spanish Moon, though their capacity is bigger. They seem more interested in booking djs and dance nights though. That's what brings the college kids in. They do a few local shows here. I doubt any of them do more than 200 people. I was hoping they would take over from Siberia since they stopped booking bands but it doesn't look like that will happen. The Melvins show drew well though.
As for the Varsity, I have already seen ICP, Sevendust, The Sword, and Helmet there this year. In years past that would be awesome for Baton Rouge. Now its about average but the year isn't even half over. In the 20 years I've lived in this town, the Varsity has been at its peak since Bowen took over. I've seen bands there I never would have imagined before. I can't expect to see one of my favorites there every week. If we get 7 or 8 good shows there a year I'm pretty happy.

Bowen was legit for awhile. I moved away a little over a year ago so I don't know about lately.

Better than its current calendar isn't saying much.
Hopefully winter circle elevates the Spanish Moon and we can get a flow of good/new music.

lol, the people who complain about the "scene" don't even go to shows. so THAT is always funny. .

Dyson House has a great show with Jesse Daniel coming up friday. Honky Tonk/rockabilly with upright bass and steel guitar

It was packed to the brink for Sweet Crude and Ria Rosa. Ventruss has filled that place as well.

I was thinking about going. The shows I've seen there have all been excellent.
Well we are missing our lead guitarist so you may want to skip this one.

This entire town is apparently a quality music free zone. For a city of this size it is absolutely appalling.
You can't attract quality acts unless they can get to the venue

Don’t GAF what anyone says the music scene in BR from about 96/97 to 2009/2010 ish was light years better than the last 5/6 years.

The varsity is good for one or two good shows a semester and that's all it will ever be just learn to accept it...baton rouge is a college town
Venue is way too small and it goes after the college crowd which financially isn't all that rich
Overall I find the music scene to be boring these days compared to the past....there is no rock in rock and roll anymore

I would like to announce that my gig at Mid City Ballroom went ok. Missing our lead guitarist threw us off a bit but we made it. I love the size of the stage though. It's nice to walk around a bit and not be stuck in a corner.

They’re one of my favorites as well. I’m also fond of The Hitchhiker, The 501st, Wonder Kid, and Forming the Void

I have never heard of one of those bands. What the hell am I even doing in this scene?
