How is Fat City Metairie now?

I lived there twenty years ago - loved it
Loved the harbor restaurants around West End Park - see they built a Marriott at the Causeway entrance near West Esplanade, so still a pretty crime free area right?
Heard Crazy Johnny's Steakhouse got shut down - ?? Awesome bartender lady back then. She would chew your arse out for jokes she didn't like (I made jokes about hurricanes), and you'd still love her.
Everything still owned by the Marcellos?

They were askin' if you were around
How you was, where you could be found
Told 'em you were living downtown

Used to hit up Kanno, Drago’s, & Crazy Johnnies all in one trip. I’d eat at one, and get take out from the other two.

This article from April gives a good idea of the recent developments there:

$50,000 Makeover Program The Jefferson Economic Development Commission, which authored the master plan and study to revitalize Fat City, is overseeing a loan forgiveness program aimed at getting business owners to give their storefronts a makeover. Under the facade improvement incentive program, businesses can get up to $50,000 to “improve the character and physical appearance of their building exteriors and storefronts.” After three years of compliance, the entire loan will be forgiven. The façade improvement program grew out of the parish’s economic development strategic plan called Jefferson EDGE 2020.

New $6 million Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office substation By late October 2018 a new $6 million Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office substation will open on Hessmer* Avenue. The First District station is designed to be a modern facility, with retail space on the bottom and the law enforcement offices on the second floor.

Construction of a Park At the corner of 18th Street and Hessmer* Avenue, the Metairie Business Development District has purchased the former Action Press to create a small park – called a “pocket” park because of its size - for green space. “There is no green space in Fat City. There’s no place to gather. There’s no place to enjoy a park setting of any kind,” Van Vrancken said. “We’ve got lots of kids, it’s a densely built community and there’s no green space. So, we hope that pocket park coming to life at 18th and Hessmer* would really add something.” In theory, the park would share parking with the sheriff’s office substation that’s currently under construction, there would be some walking trails, and perhaps even some stage areas.

Kanno
I either eat there or get take out once a week. The most entertaining part is Bobby spending five minutes listing the specials by memory.

The Parish is trying to revitalize the area, trying to make it walkable with shops-sort of like Magazine Street Uptown. Crazy Johnny’s shut down a couple of years ago. The area is surrounded by crappy apartments so that’s gonna be a challenge. We shall see.

Fat City died when Kenny’s Key West closed

Johnnie died a couple weeks ago.
Drago's has expanded and bought parking.
Cool diner, Rocksy's featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives has already closed and is being renovated as something else.
Tinder Box in the mall closed a couple years ago, Mayan Imports bought the business, now it's in the middle of Fat City by the sushi place.
The Korean place is still there.
Ski Lodge is gone.
