If poor kids in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East could google, it wouldn’t be for McGregor.

Neymar, Lebron, and Tiger are on a different planet than half the people named in this thread as candidates

Outside of soccer, LeBron is probably the most popular and well known athlete. People around the world LOVE basketball - especially in Asia. Shoot even Stephon Marbury was a hero in that part of the world. I guess the debate is popular vs. well known. People like Federer, Tiger Woods, etc. are extremely well known - but I think more people like basketball than those other sports.

Neymar is the third most famous athlete in the world hands down. Soccer is so much bigger globally than basketball. In fact, I would say the only athletes who even comes close to the fame of the top soccer players are LeBron, Usain Bolt and Tiger Woods.
the only 2 people that have a clue

Kinda sad nobody has mentioned Lewis Hamilton.
And I'm sure there's some cricket player that can make an argument but no American would ever know.

I don't watch F1. Nothing against it, and have liked it here and there. But I don't watch it and don't know the big names.
However, I figured at least one would be up there in a ranking. That's why I suggested the three from The Grand Tour, it would lead to a famous driver.
I have heard of Hamilton, and think I saw him on T.G. or T.G.T.

I doubt people in some rice paddy field in the interior of China know Curry, etc.

Yeah, people like to throw out all of these soccer players, and they do dominate the top 20 or so spots, but LeBron is ahead of the vast majority.
As far as active athletes, LeBron and Tiger are the only two non-soccer guys that can compete.
