I don’t enjoy it. It lulls me to sleep. Anyone else feel this way?

I’d rather listen to Chubbs’ version of “We’ve Only Just Begun”

Have a downvote.

Karen Carpenter's voice is one of the few perfect combinations of pure talent and amazing technique that this world has ever known.

Thanks for putting that to words. Every once in a while I have to give here a listen just to creep myself out. Especially knowing how sick she was while recording and playing. Gives me the heeby jeebies. Its like being afraid of clowns or something.

Her pitch is fine, use of melody is fine, even her restraint from over-singing is pretty good. But I agree that there was always a certain lazy, textured aspect to her timbre that sounded like something a voice coach would try to train out of her.

Having said that, the appeal of her music was never about superhuman vocal chops anyway.

She was about to keel over dead the whole time.

Ever seen her drum solo on youtube? That's also petty amazing for someone who hadn't eaten in 5 years.

Nope. Her voice was perfect for the songs she sang

They wrote (or Richard often borrowed) very corny songs, sometimes from obscure TV ads. A little rearranging, a good backing band... and then Karen turned them into all-time classics.

No one before or since could pull off what Karen did with those otherwise cheesy lyrics.

If Mama Cass had eaten one less sammich and Karen Carpenter had eaten one more, then they might both be alive today.
