While some may be in “cush” Euro spots, an overwhelming majority are in Afghanistan and Iraq. You wouldn’t last a month over there pussy.

My exact case in point. Your son served in Afghanistan and Iraq, in the dirt and sand, wondering if everyone they meet wants to kill them.

vs

Deployed to Europe (or even Japan as someone said). I know they are deployed and away from their families, but come on, they are not roughing it. They have jobs to do, but their down time is sight seeing, etc.

When that one reply to this thread said Japan, it reminded me of someone on Wheel of Fortune, whose husband was deployed to Japan. I thought to myself, that must be a really sweet duty assignment for the NG.

I am not knocking anyone deployed, just knocking people who act like being deployed to Europe/Japan/etc is the same as being deployed to the combat area.

Sorry I got that mixed up.

Ever been around cop sultan kehl? I know my spelling is off. I know we had a guard unit convoy behind ours for one of our convoys to there.

I was in the 3rd ID.

We stopped by there at the gate to pick up a few HET vehicles to link up with our Current Convoy. Never set foot in it, but recall being a very high up and secluded COP.

Had a truck hit with an IED around 2am I think, no KIA in that contact. 3 purple hearts, one of them was a Lieutenant asleep with his Kevlar off. Came out with a broken nose haha. Glad he made it none the less.

Eta: also been to FOB Airborne, we cleared out an ambush from a school house that had RCP pinned down during a dismount op.

Other places, Shank and Gardere. Plus BAF of course. Also JBAD.

Can someone explain why we have National guard deployed to Germany or Spain?

Let me end my rant about being deployed here once and for all. For all you non-comprehensive readers, I never once said the NG was not deployed in the Middle East.

I was making a comparison to being deployed to the ME vs being deployed elsewhere (even state side).

shite, 25-30 years ago, if I could have gotten some deployments to Japan or Europe, I would have done it in a heart beat.

I was deployed (I volunteered, my unit didn't get activated) in the ME, and I volunteered to go to Panama in 88 for three months (that was a sweet and cush assignment).

As for my statement about the guy on the flight deck, like I said, I was just quoting a comedian, Bill Burr.

Here is the video

I'm just upset my OP didn't reach 200 downvotes

I posted it earlier but the one time I saw it in Germany was when a NG unit stepped in to replace an AD unit that was deploying to Iraq.

I've also seen it stateside. My unit was deploying to Afghanistan and a NG unit came in to handle our garrison responsibilities (mostly gate guard).

Military is big with lots of dangerous moving parts. A kid drowned in Guam offloading a tank in the harbor. Helicopters crash. People get run over. Overseas vacation. Really? You piss me off.

In 2016, there were nearly 5200 work related deaths in the US. There are a lot of dangerous jobs. If I remember correctly, the military work related deaths (non combat of course) is lower than the national average. Just because someone has a hard/dangerous job in the military, doesn't mean their duty station cannot be a cush job. Maybe I should have said cush duty assignment, not job.
