Nintendo Switch - Charging off the dock

I have always placed my Nintendo Switch on the dock to charge. With a trip coming up I figure I can charge it using the USB cable that comes with the Wireless Pro Controller. I've tried testing it out to make sure it works but so far it isn't.
I've used a usb converter wall plug but that doesn't do anything and then last night I plugged it into my laptop before bed and woke up and it only charged 2%.
Am I using the wrong USB cord? Is there a specific power source needed to charge the Switch? I am buying a portable power bank so I can charge on the go but don't want to buy one if it isn't going to charge the Switch. I was looking on Amazon at the RAVPower 16750 16750mAh. Does anyone have any recommendations on these as well?
Appreciate any helpful replies.

Did you try turning it off and turning it back on?

My kid charges it using my USB C phone charger. Seems to work fine.

Using the USB from the pro controller doesn't really work well. It's not enough power to consistently charge it. Remove the AC cable from the wall and just use that if you can. I will go months without using the dock at all and just have it charging directly to the wall.

The AC cable works like you said however that doesn't help me while traveling except in the hotel room. I ordered a power bank and it seems to charge the Switch using the Pro Controller USB C wire. Gonna test it tonight to see just how fast it charges and if I'd be better buying a new USB C.
How do you know if you are buying the appropriate USB C wire to handle charging something.

The cord isnt your problem you have to have a different power block that plugs into the wall, for instance you need an ipad charger plug not the iphone one. The switch requires 5 volts, so find an adapter that supports that

Thanks. I had thought about this so I checked the power block I was using and it says Output: 5.1V. Maybe its just old, I don't know.

Don't think this is necessarily what the OP was looking for, but figured this could go here. Adjustable charging stand to be released in July, probably around $20.
