Just in last week.

#1: out getting pizza at Mellow Mushroom, which is quite good. Saw a guy I vaguely recognized from same field because he's kinda odd looking but fairly well known. Next day he appears on the "People You May Know" list - of my fake account that only has two friends from this area. Like some kind of location based thing except I don't keep location services on but had turned it on briefly driving there to check traffic.

#2: at a public business meeting ran into old business contact. Texted wife that I had run into him. Next time I opened FB guess who pops up on "People..." Yeah that guy. No location services used though only texted his name - and via iPhone text NOT FB IM (which I never use).

The best way to prevent the invasion of privacy like this is to delete your social media accounts. Turn off all location services on your phone. And turn off the microphone, if that’s possible.

Were you using WiFi in either of these situations?

I don't use the FB app frequently and it's usually not active, same with location services. Not sure about microphone though. Wouldn't apply to #1 but could to #2 because on the way home I called my wife and talked about the guy by name.

Hmmmm.
Well, I don’t know. Unless Facebook is in cahoots with phone service providers and making links between people that were in the same place at the same time on their phones, not really sure how it’s plausible with the fake profile and Mellow Mushroom situation but as far the business meeting goes I guess it’s possible (if you have your employment info on your profile) for it use an algorithm of some sort to link two people that work for the same or similar companies that were together in the same place drawing cell data.

Ehhh. Who the hell knows? Maybe ZBerg is a Bond villain.

Nah, no clear connection bw me and the guy at the meeting, I don't think he was on FB a few years back when we were on some biz orgs together. Hadn't seen him since. That's what makes it so peculiar.

Strong argument against those FB spies.

Maybe they searched you and your phone number, name, email (info used to create that email), patterns in browsing, or something linked things

I hear Grinder tracks location
