True, to an extent.

Fact is Smart being from Baton Rouge helps us a lot and everyone backing off Williams during his arrest, except for us really, certainly helped vault us to the top there.

Not saying we had no chance to land either guy if the situations were different, but those 2 contributing factors helped us in a major way.

But I've seen it repeated several times and it's wrong:

Wade already knew Waters from VCU
Heier already knew Days and Williams.

That's their job. I'm sure they "already know" a bunch of other recruits for the future, and they "already knew" a bunch of recruits that LSU did not get.

And based on LSU's history, Smart being from Baton Rouge could be considered a hindrance. He certainly was not coming to LSU prior to Wade being hired.

Chalking all those up, even Reid, to some kind of fluke of good luck, is flat out wrong.

If I was a betting man, I'd say Smart would absolutely not be here right now if Jones was still the coach, Baton Rouge native or not.

Considering EW didn't sign his LOI until this April, I'm sure with a great season and tournament run, there will be some high profile uncommitted/unsigned kids that will notice LSU, (surely by mid-season).

Smart being from here was absolutely an advantage to us, we don't land EVERY local kid we want, but let's not pretend him being a few miles from campus was somehow a negative to our recruitment in him. Our chances only go down with any recruit the further away they are. Doesnt mean we dont land kids far away, but again, distance usually plays some factor, and a 5-star kid right at home is a huge help.

I wouldn't call it a fluke so much as aligning of stars. Reid's girlfriend playing here, Williams' arrest which definitely worked to our favor since we were basically the only school still really recruiting him for a while, and Smart being down the road are all things that were nice to have this cycle. Not to say there was no way we land those guys otherwise, but again, factors that helped us out with ELITE level guys.

I think what some of us are trying to say is this shouldn't be the expectation every class. Wade's true recruiting ability I think we will find out for the 2019/2020 classes. Unlikely we get so fortunate to have an elite kid right at home, and some of those other things happen all at the same time once again.

If you look at early 2019 recruiting, right now, we're not particularly in it with any highly rated 2019 kids, but it's also literally just getting started. I've said it a few times, but I think it will be a class mostly made up of 100-200ish ranked program players. If we land 3+ Top 100 kids, that would be really nice, but I'm not expecting it at the moment. I think we get 1, maybe 2.

For whatever reason, (maybe all the eybl travel) proximity to a recruit's school of choice isn't as big a factor in basketball as it is in football.

I'm not saying proximity is a HUGE factor, but it is definitely a factor. Chances only go down for us to get Ja'Vonte Smart if he's in Washington instead Louisiana.

It’s not a factor for some, but Smart has consistently said he chose LSU because Baton Rouge is his city.

Most of the class will be guys right at 100 and inside the top 100, just probably not a 5*.

Closer is better in either sport, but it just seems to me like football players are more likely to stay close to home. I'm sure that there has been or will be a study on it somewhere.

The staff seems pretty confident that they are going to be bringing in a 5* “top 20 in the country” big man for the 2019 class, plus at least one more elite guard. From my limited experience with him, Coach Wade is planning on bringing in a top 10 national class every year while he is here. I would be very surprised if we don’t have at least one five star per recruiting class for as long as he is here.

We will need one with what we are losing. But a class with some program big men is much needed. We’ve had quite the revolving door there and need some consistency. I think Days is one guy that will bring that, but a legit 5 is needed

I'm not so sure we need a legit 5, the game is changing in college and look at a team like Villanova. They put 5 shooters on the floor most of the game (including a big who can shoot) and now have won 2 championships recently.

Having a near 7 footer seems pretty overrated, mostly because decent 7 footers are extremely rare, and if you're facing a smaller team, defensively they cant defend.

Villanova didn't have a player on their roster over 6'9 this season. Their one big starter, who is a 6'9 260, is a +40% 3 point shooter.

I dont think there's a "need" to have a 6'10-7 footer true center on a roster in college by any means. In fact I'd rather a versatile 6'8 6'9 guy who can shoot.

Yes, college basketball is getting more athletic, but it is not getting taller.

Both of Villanova's bigs, Paschal and Spellman, are 6-9 and 250 or thereabouts and can push practically anybody out of the lane.

You have to have that physical enforcer down low.

You're right that he doesn't have to be 6-11 or 7-0, but you need at least one guy 6-9 who can win down low. And preferably you'll have at least three - or at least three guys who are 6-8 with some meat on their bones.

As it stands now we have two - Bigby-Williams and Reid. We need one more from the three scholarships we have left to give.

I'm not saying we have to only have a team of 6'8 200 pound guys who can shoot, but again, a true center is not something we need at all. By "true center" I imagine what he was talking about was a big beefy guy who cant shoot but play inside almost exclusively.

I'd still much rather a guy who can shoot over one who cant, assuming all else fairly equal.

If Naz Reids could grow on trees, that'd be pretty ideal

I’d love to find a Shavon Coleman type to help fill out this class. Rachal is similar, but needs more experience.

When I think of a true center in cbb I just think of a rim protector who doesn’t get pushed around. We will need one of those after this season

I like the 7 footer Balsa from the prep school in Florida that Patterson and Simmons went to. I think he came for a visit last season and probably a 2-3 year player
