In the classical sense, absolutely.

It's really annoying having to keep track of the history of some of these labels. I mean the fact that the Democrats and Republicans essentially swapped parties in the 20th century is completely lost on a lot of people. I think it's intentional, sometimes....keep people confused to create such a mess that you REALLY have to be truly interested in political thought to comprehend the history and how it does, or doesn't, apply today.

This is a pretty large over-generalization.

White southerners switched parties, but in many areas of the north, the areas where republicans today are strongest were where they were strongest a long time ago, as well.

It really isn't even worth comparing our parties to what was going on 100 years ago. Parties are much more ideological today. The GOP is clearly the more conservative party, and democrats are clearly the more left-wing party.

A long time ago, there were no such ideological lines. The parties were more based on region, economic interest, heritage, etc. There were lots of liberal republicans and conservative democrats.

Which is an enormous exercise in political ignorance as progressivism is an ideology totally separate and apart from American social liberalism.

Basically, the left hijacked a political term that already contained substantive meaning and redefined it for the sake of political convenience. It would be totally ignorant if it wasn't also incredibly egotistical.

And this is my problem with the left both in America and historical. It preys upon the politically ignorant for power and then allows that ignorance to run wild in name of holding that power.


ETA: In terms of the OP, I agree with the premise. The personal criticism of Michelle is ridiculous. It's the opposite side of the political worship coin. The creepiest and sickest trend in American politics is political worship; its ugly sister is personally attacking the family of the opposition.
