Since Obama's election and the uprising of the Koch-sponsored "organic" Tea Party movement, right wing politics have experienced quite a renaissance in participation. Every Jim Bob Gooberton from Bumfrick, MS suddenly thinks he's a patriot and a strong conservative because he started watching Sean Hannity and listening to Rush while driving home from work. This participation was great for the GOP as it resulted in over 1000 elections going to their party.
The problem is that the Kochs and the GOP tried to ignore the monster they were creating. Suddenly the GOP was no longer the party of Reagan, HW Bush, Friendman, or Buckley....it became the party of intellectually bankrupt far right loudmouths like Hannity, Palin, Cruz, Brewer, and, utimately, Trump. They lost easy Senate seats by running people like the witch Christine O'Donnell, Todd Akin and his legitimate rape comments, and Sharon Engle. They couldn't rally around Mitt Romney because he was a "RINO". Hell, they laughed Jon Huntsman, who had earned the the award for most conservative governor in the union when he ran Utah, off the 2012 Presidential debate stage because he had the nerve to say that his party was going off the rails with falsehoods.
There are plenty of good conservative folks out there...as you say, "reasonable people". Unfortunately, this board is littered with a lot of folks who didn't know dick about politics before Obama was elected. They're reactionary buffoons with absolutely no couth, no ability to grasp the complexities of government, no true beliefs outside what is spoon fed to them by the conservative entertainment complex, and, perhaps scariest of all, display an incredible level of paranoia leading them to truly suspend reality to buy into conspiracies which justify their viewpoints.
As a progressive, this is all kind of good news. There's a reckoning coming because "reasonable people" have had enough of this stupid bullshite. The good people in this country are going to start castigating these dipshits and shove them back to the fringe where their lunacy belongs.

Besides, what about Reagan? Or even Ted Cruz? (You may have not liked Cruz for one reason or another. I, myself, was on the fence about him. But, he was conservative and he was uncompromising, but not sophomoric or vulgar.
Being a strong conservative doesn’t mean being vulgar. Quite the contrary.

They do that too. Bout 20 of them with all different personalities and some crazier than others will bombard you with insults and questions, if you don’t get to every single one (which inevitably ends after they paint themselves into a corner and disappear) they make it known that you wouldn’t answer them directly and that means you were stumped. WFB was a huge Rush Limbaugh fan and Trump is following Rush's policy preferences at about a 90% rate.

Friedman, Buckley and HW were all intellectuals. You really think they'd think Trump was good for the conservative movement? They were fundamental figures in creating the current establishment GOP. Tell me, how does the establishment feel about Trump? How do the MAGA folks feel about establishment Republicans? Those are rhetorical questions.
Limbaugh has changed drastically over time. He's always been full of shite but he didn't start embracing the "crazy" until the mid-00s because his ratings depended on him doing so. Limbaugh is a windsock...whichever way the right wing zeitgeist is blowing, he will go that direction with them.
