Doesn't destroy your privacy if you stay off social media, but many people don't see that as an option.

I'd love to know if that is real.

Not even close to being true.

Actually, you would have to completely stay off the internet.

It's real.

It's the same guy that wrote "The Trouble With Tribbles" episode of Star Trek.

In 1999, Ester Schindler asked David Gerrold to write a "future of computing" prediction for the magazine.

First thing I thought too! I had to do some digging to make sure this wasn't Nathan Fillion conducting some sort of elaborate troll.

Sorry to break it to you, but your phone listens to what you do regardless of whether you're on social media. It knows where you are, who you talk to, etc.

Even if you insulate yourself from all of that, we still have no privacy anymore. When you only had a land line, you could just not answer the phone and "disappear" for a while. Now we are on call 24/7. Try not answering your phone for 3 or 4 hours when your SO is calling: they'll either think your dead or cheating.

Not in 1999

As a young graduate student at LSU, I proposed an online system where students could check their grades. My professor said it was interesting, but the privacy concerns would keep it from ever happening.

Agreed, once upon a time commuting to work was a great place to think and get your thoughts for the day together, that's gone along with a lot of other time once considered private. People say just turn it off, not that simple when bosses, customers, spouses, kids expect it to be on.

“I call this device a personal information telecommunications agent.”

WRONG. No one calls it that.
