Mainly talking about the previews.

Looks like Philip is going to knock the bottom out of Kimmy at Elizabeth's request.

Looks like the hockey player is gonna get hit and Stan will be all over that one.

Last scene this week was Philip pouring over the bills at the office recalling how he nearly starved in the USSR when he was a kid (no more than 7/8).

It also looks like Philip and Paige get into a fight. I assume he’s making a point about not being ready. They don’t show his face, but it’s the same plaid shirt he’s wearing in a different preview scene

There was a teaser before the season that showed them fighting. As for motivations? That should be interesting.

I thought it was a way of saying that he’s still just scraping by, just in a different way.

If I remember correctly, the clips before the season started showed Phillip telling Paige "lets see what you got"

I will say again...poor Henry.

Don't know if he has still maintained his relationship with Stan, but I can see him telling Stan about the money troubles and tuition when he's home for the holidays (remember, T'giving is coming up [Kimmy] and Philip was looking for a "break" from the school to get past the holidays). Stan comes to Philip about it and Philip breaks down and spills to Stan.

Unlikely, but what a fricking turn. Not just spying on the wife for the people "in power", but turncoating altogether.

I think the most likely scenario is stan connects oleg to phillip somehow. Stan decides maybe not to turn him in or maybe he does. Guess we will have to see

The way this season is going, I wouldn't be that shocked if Phillip ends up approaching Stan and coming clean to stop Elizabeth who has gone over the edge

Can someone explain to me how the Center is anti-Gorbachev when Arkady Ivanovich, the head of Directorate S, is a leading pro-Gorbachev member of the intelligence community?

Oleg said something very interesting last night, that he knew he was being followed and this would need to be his last meeting with Philip in person. I wonder if there is any chance the FBI got photos of Philip from last night. In his disguise, I imagine Dennis won't be able to recognize him, but Stan certainly could.

Also on a totally unrelated note, does anyone remember how Stan's former partner, Chris Amador, was killed? Was it a random break-in? I know Stan thought it was a KGB job and they went after Vlad, but in that case he was mistaken.

think he spotted philip and elizabeth (undercover) and they had to take care of business, though they weren't trying necessarily to kill him at that moment ...

quote:

Chris Amador was an FBI agent and colleague of Stan Beeman. He served in Vietnam, and had "no wife, no kids, no pets, no hobbies." Amador was an unabashed womanizer, but seemed to have a genuine soft spot for his co-worker Martha Hanson.

When Martha turns down his request to resume their relationship, Amador begins unauthorized surveillance on her. Cornering Phillip outside her apartment one morning, he attempts to arrest him, despite having no grounds. When Phillip resists, Amador brandishes a knife; Phillip stabs him with it as they struggle. Phillip throws Chris in the trunk of his car and takes him to a safe house where he is given medical treatment by the Jennings, who try to keep him alive and hope to get information out of him.

Chris dies of his wound later in the episode, leaving an angry and vengeful Stan Beeman seeking retribution for his friend's death. Beeman ultimately murders Vlad Kosygin in revenge.

Watched Ep 4 last night

Love Phillip-Oleg meetings in person, too bad they said no more

Fascinating how the once seemingly invincible Elizabeth is not only unraveling but essentially failing at every mission. Perfect metaphor for the USSR at the time

She’s always been the true believer but I wonder did she ever wonder why they need to steal all this technology from us vs creating it in their own?

I always assumed the travel agency business was mostly a front and the Center was propping it up. Surely they, KGB, didn’t have them running a business on their own all this time?

Looks like it’s on the rest off the way. The battle with Paige is definitely layers. I have a feeling she’s gonna frick up big

Cleanest way is to have their business be completely legit. Even back then, they could track some $$$ and people and travel agents/airlines were some of the first to have a relatively integrated computer network that could be monitored.

Before this season started, I would have bet on this, but

Makes me think that Elizabeth is going to be the downfall.

Oh Come one, there’s no way you could take 2 kids in their early 20s raised in communism and have them start and run a successful small business from scratch. Of course it would have to be a real business, with some real customers, they’d have to file taxes and all but the Center would have to guarantee it remains solvent. They gave them identities they could have customers. Would think it would not be good for Phillip to go bankrupt for a lot of reasons

That could be and would be fitting as a metaphor as well

I suspect they got seed money and early support, but by all indications, it looks like it was a legit and self-sustaining operation by the time of the show.

I like the subplot for this season and the financial issues. Reading up on the show, this is apparently indicative of a real sea change in that industry during the late 80s.

Of course, we're right around the time of the 87 crash, so I wonder how they will handle that.

Definitely self sustaining based on the story line this year just seems a little implausible to me because it would be a huge risk if a business for one of the illegals went under.

That’s interesting obviously the internet basically eliminated that industry but I do remember travel agents like that all over the place. Would pretty much by all air line tickets thru them.

The crash was October 19 the World Series started on Oct 17 - Oct 26 but I thought it said game 7 when they were watching at that guys house?
