To sum it all up looking back, the Soviets posed an existential threat to the United States. They were committed to Marxist ideology, they fomented worldwide revolution, and sought the annihilation of capitalism. The U.S., being capitalism’s torchbearer was the USSR’s greatest enemy/rival.

Personally I don't hate them at all.
They provided key parts to the ISS that has paid my paycheck since 1997. They continue to allow US astronauts to fly on their Soyuzes to get to the ISS since the US doesn't have a vehicle currently (Bush killed Space Shuttle Program and Obama killed the Constellation Program).
