I have been in the club business for 40 years and things have not changed for the better. Most of the middle class has moved to the outlying areas and people don't want to risk coming back into town. People generally only go out for special events now. The days of going out every night are over. I was fortunate to be in the club business in the golden years.

What does this have to do with casinos? That seems like it has more to do with suburban sprawl, crime, and other options for being social besides face to face time in a bar.

It's not like BR is bereft of places to drink

But you can't say that on the OT. A particular dance club that XYZ poster liked in 1989 has closed, therefore nightlife is dead and the next generation is stupid.

Another thing to think about is that drink specials are venturing further and further away from being truly cheap. There are some good deals to be had around town, but they're not what they were in your day you speak of.

Add in the fact that you'd be an idiot to drink and drive these days.. it makes going out really expensive. My regular bar is 1.8 miles away, which is $7 per way. Then a drink runs me ~$7. Add in tipping. A night out is $14 (transportation) + $40 (drinks) + $8-$10 (tip).

Between the nausea-inducing cost of rent, health insurance premiums, cable/internet/cell phone bills, etc. .. it isn't easy. I don't play video games or watch much TV, but I certainly stay in more now than I ever did because of the dramatic difference it has had on my bank account. I had to trade going out all the time for my $400/month health insurance.

I don’t give a shite about the old hang outs. I don’t live then. I live right now, but what we have now sucks by comparison. That’s what I’m talking about. I’m looking for this generation to up their game and show us all what they have, but so far, it’s been a real let down.

This week I had $5 dollar mules at the merchant on Monday, $3 any draft at red zeppelin on Tuesday, free crawfish and $3 beers today at bengal tap room.

And my wife is pregnant so I've got a free DD

There are good deals, but it wasn't what it was when OP was younger. You have to specifically go somewhere on a special night when they're running a special deal. And usually, it is non-peak times and non-peak nights. Sure that has always been the case, but regular prices are certainly higher than they once were.

If you want to be where the crowd is (Bulldog on a Wed night, Olive on a Friday night, downtown on weekends), you are spending quite a good bit to have a good time.

I admit I hate crowded places so I'm the worst person to answer OPs question

Other than 18-20 year olds at LSU I think most people prefer a more laid back drinking environment these days.

It also costs more to lease commercial space, so the target audience of a lot of these establishments changed.

IMO the options are far better for people my age now than it was 15 years ago. We could afford to pay a little more than we once did and prefer a more laid back place.

I'm certainly not going to morn the loss of shitty dance clubs that couldn't sell enough beer and food to pay increase costs of rent in this area.

Just walk into Cadillac Cafe with a shirt on that says you have a 10 inch cock. You will have all the night and after night life you want.

I got your drinks.

Seriously though, I think you bring up a very valid point in drinking and driving today, although I will use Uber in a second today, and they didn’t have that back in the day. I’m truly hoping that downtown will really take off in the near future though as just staying the night in a hotel seems to be the answer to most problems associated with going out these days. I’ve stayed down there after hitting up the bars before and it’s been a lot less to think about and I had more fun as a result of not worrying about it, similar to when I do the same in NOLA. I just wish they had more options but the more people show interest the more it will change for the better.

Have you been downtown in the past 10 years, Grandpa? It's definitely on the right track.

Lighten up junior. I was there a couple of weeks ago, and I said it’s on track. It just hasn’t arrived just yet. It’s in it’s infancy stage right now, but it does look promising.
