Can you use regular 5.56 mags and lowers?
Looks impressive Ballistically.

The .224 Valkyrie is essentially the 6.8 SPC necked down for .224 bullets. Takes 6.8 bolts and mags I believe.

Mag is the same, just a different follower, correct?

I'm trying to decide between doing a .224 Valkyrie upper and 6.5 grendel upper for reaching out at the range and the occasional hunt. Can't decide which one.

Same mag and follower. It's just a 6.8 case necked down to .224 so there is no reason for a different follower.

Be careful when purchasing a .224V barrel if you want to shoot heavy bullets. Most of the barrels I see are 7.5 twist and from what I'm reading those barrels will not stabilize the 90gr VLD bullets. There are several barrel guys that are going to 6.5:1

Somebody figure the RPM on that thing with a 6.5:1 barrel

Let me rephrase, I'm thinking of buying a complete upper in one of the two...
Posted on 3/9/18 at 1:28 pm to lsujunky
@ 4000fps that would be 312,000 rpm

I bet that would make a really cool sound spinning dat fast

I aint doing that math but the reaction torque on the barrel would be pretty serious too.
Woul be able to stabilize a 10000 gr bullet probably

Wouldn't have to worry about getting the heavy bullets to stabilize.

The .224 beats the Grendel in flight and stays super sonic a little further. However, most of the data available now is for .224 out of a 24in barrel. It is going to be a nice niche round for distance target shooters and varminters. The Grendel still beats out the .224 in energy and in flight ballistics aren't that far off from .224 Valk. So, if you are planning to shoot game bigger than varmint sized I would stick with the Grendel. THe .224 Valk at this point is also going to be a handloaders round and to get the full potential out of the 90gr VLDs your best option is to pair it up with a Six8 receiver set from LWRC ($$$), which stretches the capabilities of the AR15 magwell and allows for longer OAL loadings. Most "economical" barrel offerings right now are 18" 1:7 and PSA I think has a 20", but lets be honest if you are building a precision gun PSA probably isn't who you want sourcing your barrel. As someone else mentioned, I would be looking for a 20" 1:6.5" twist because the only advantage to .224 over regular 5.56 is being able to use the 90gr VLDs. No one is buying a .224 to shoot .224 77gr SMK projectiles out of a 18" barrel when the 5.56 chambers send them just about as good, it just doesn't make sense. Mag wise, I've heard the ASC offerings have the potential to be finicky and some people I know that were able to get their hands on guns to test out used CMMG mags without issue. The 6.8 mags from Magpul seem to be the most reliable, but again those require the proprietary Six8 receivers. There are at least 2 companies out there that are tooling up to copy the lower and upper of the Six8, but you're probably looking at a few months of R&D, another couple months for everyones variances to get approved for these companies to produce the lowers for them and then whatever lead time there is on machining the orders.
