CBS

I watched a 60 minute piece this Sunday on German prisons.
Apparently, American's involved in running our prison systems are studying Germany's to see why they have a lower recidivism rate, less prison violence and better overall prisoner satisfaction.
One of the things that German prisons have are, weekend leaves, even for murderers. They are allowed to go home for the weekends, without supervision or surveillance and then return after their visits.
Prisoners are also allowed to wear casual street clothes and come and go out of their units at will. Gourmet type meals are provided to them.
Prisoners have comfortable apartment type cells and even have video game systems and tv's in their units.
Those especially serious prisoners who have life sentences are given their own fully furnished private apartments where they have their own key. They too can come and go at will.
I found it to be interesting

That doesn't sound like punishment. However, I'm not opposed to making prison a little less difficult for many prisoners. Rape should absolutely be stopped.

The guy running the German prison system went out of his way to say they don't believe in punishment. They only stress rehabilitation.

Well if you watch the video, almost every prisoner is of the same persuasion.

Part of it is that us prisons don’t really focus on rehabilitation.

It's one if the main reasons I think studying their system is a waste of time. It's apples and oranges.

this is the dream

but the problem is that the US has an underclass that Germany simply doesn't have (yet, at least)

this underclass is almost impossible to fully rehabilitate because they have limited economic prospects without the stigma of a record

Opposite...

Crimes that don't harm other people, no prison time...probation bracelet.

DUIs, reckless actions that could harm others...remove priveledge...2nd offense, see next

Crimes that harm others (rape, manslaughter, multiple DUIs)...banish, give them winter gear, a parachute and a knife...drop them on Banks island

Crimes despicable to a right society (murder, against children, etc.)...death

"Persuasion"? Didn't watch the Vid. I had that spot tuned in and still missed it; figured it would be a story of innovative success. I remember watching one a while back on the Chinese prison system; they were tough, but seriously focused on addressing anti-social behavior and rehab.

Our culture has produced a particular form of *criminal* psychoses; entitlement grievance-based, pernicious, where respect for law has been undermined by Leftist criticism of essential American (Constitutional) values/principles. This disrespect is employed as an excuse for all manner of essentially heathen behavior. The Germans don't face this (yet)...and the Chinese simply would not tolerate it.

I just had a mental image of Jackson MS doing this. They wouldn’t be able to arrest people fast enough

I saw another program last week called,"Worlds toughest prisons." In one particular segment, a prison in South America was shown. The prisoners are almost exclusively left to fend for themselves, except for meager food rations that are only given to a chosen few. The others have to rely on the charity of others or rummaging through the garbage to survive. It was rough.

Yes. The one prisoners accommodations were so good, people here would actually kill to gain access to it.
