Chromebook vs laptop?

I tried on the travel board but hoping to get better results here. I want to get a budget model device mainly for inflight entertainment. Looking for a small 11” screen that I can watch/stream movies, play games, read books, connect to internet, etc. Also looking for a model with an SD/micro slot for offline use and storage. I have a separate laptop for work for docs and heavy lifting.
Not sure if I should go with chrome book or laptop. My understanding is chrome book is designed to be connected to the internet so I’m a little concerned it would be useless if there is a problem with WiFi during the flight.
Any suggestions for those who fly a lot?

You don’t want a chromebook for on flight entertainment. The Wi-Fi in planes isn’t nearly robust enough most of the time. There are some airlines who are moving to using streaming to your device for in flight entertainment. But it is using their own entertainment packages, not Netflix or the like.
You want something that will let you work and watch offline. Chromebooks have limitations in that area.

What exactly are you going to connect to on your laptop to watch movies on a plane? Or to do work if it needs a connection? That’s absurd.
The chromebook is the way to go. You can work offline on a chromebook as well. Just set your google drive to work offline as well.
If you are downloading movies to watch, get a bigger hard drive in a chromebook and go to town.

I'd probably look into an inexpensive tablet rather than a Chromebook or laptop. Amazon Fire maybe, though I've soured on Amazon products lately.

sounds like you need a tablet.

My advice would be to get a tablet. The biggest advantage is that there's no restriction on having a tablet out for takeoff and landing like there is a regular laptop with a physical keyboard.
The Lenovo Yoga tablet 3 or Yoga tablet Pro in the 8 or 10 inch size or the Huwai Mediapad would be perfect. The Lenovo tab 4 would also be a ice. Asus also makes some nice droid tablets.

Several years back I was in the middle of studying for some professional exams when my PC died. I was broke, and I needed something quick and cheap to help me finish studying. I went with a $200 HP 11 chromebook. It worked great. I loved the little thing. Worked fine for in-flight entertainment, too. It even came with 10 free in-flight wifi logins. I still use it for my in-flight entertainment and it's got to be four or five years old now. The battery is obviously a little less than before, but it's still chugging along.
RAM was really the only issue I ever ran in to. It could easily get bogged down with too many things going on, but that'll be a problem on any cheap laptop.
