Not sure how I feel about this, hope they don’t bury the security system.

I wish Amazon and Google would team and just make super smarthome devices.

Hooray! Now both Amazon and Google own shitty home automation companies!

It sounds like you don't have much to worry about.

Amazon is expected to keep Ring as an independent business, much like it has with its other acquisitions, like Zappos and Twitch, according to GeekWire, which earlier reported details of the deal.
...This isn't the first time Amazon has partnered with Ring. The e-commerce company previously invested in Ring through its Alexa Fund, which exclusively invests in companies that help scale its Alexa voice technology.

Package theft is such an issue that Amazon tried their crazy "let our driver enter your home to drop off packages" plan which most people just don't want. Ring is known to reduce crime in areas where it's deployed. They may just want to take the market leader and put their resources behind it to make the tech even more widespread.

I hope this means footage stored on their AWS is free for prime members

Wait, why don't you like Ring or Nest?

I don't know if they'd do that. Prime Photos gives you free storage for photos but only 5GB for video. I'm paying $12 a year for 100 GB of storage for videos. I think it's more likely they do some sort of integration and bundling with Amazon Cloud Drive to create more ecosystem lock in. Maybe the $30 a year for Ring gets you unlimited Ring cloud storage plus the $12 tier of Amazon Cloud Drive for free.

I'd be cool with that as well.

I'd rather the damn security system come out and for $100 a year I get full monitoring plus unlimited ring video storage for unlimited cameras.

Since I always need a sauce:
Amazon is buying smart doorbell maker Ring
"With Nest’s first smart video doorbell right around the corner, Amazon is busy buying up the competition.
After acquiring Blink just two months ago, Amazon is now acquiring Ring, makers of the self-titled Ring doorbell (plus a bunch of other security gear, like solar security cameras, floodlight cams and an in-home alarm system).
GeekWire broke the rumor this afternoon, and we’ve just received independent confirmation.
Details on the deal are still pretty light; the financial terms of the deal, for example, haven’t trickled out just yet. Update: Reuters is reporting, via tweet, that the sale price was more than $1 billion. The company had raised around $209 million to date, according to Crunchbase.
This acquisition makes plenty of sense. Amazon has already built a few connected cameras of its own — but hardware is, as they say, hard, and that’s not going to change. With nearly a dozen solid products to its name, the Ring team has proven themselves more than capable of building hardware (and I’m sure its array of patents doesn’t hurt, either.) With Amazon, Google, Apple et al. all duking it out for physical space in and around your home, someone was going to make a big offer — and I’d be surprised if Amazon was the only bidder in the mix. Plus, who on earth is responsible for more doorbell presses than Amazon?"

Throwback to the creator of the first Ring: the Erin Andrews voyeur

Which is odd because Amazon created their own Amazon Cloud Cam that I almost bought yesterday. Guess that's going by the wayside? Or maybe they'll just expand upon that with the Ring moniker and make a newer Indoor and Outdoor Cam?
I don't think Ring makes an indoor cam, do they? Nest seems to be leading the market there.

well technically that was a 'smart peephole' not a doorbell

Their new stick up cams that were announced at CES will be indoor and outdoor use. No firm release date yet other than sometime in 2018
An indoor camera would integrate well with their Ring Alatm system that is finally releasing in spring 2018.
I am very interested in both products as I currently have 8 ring cameras between 2 properties and integration would be great
