i bought a brand new gtx 1080 for 550 on cyber monday. Now they're all either sold out of $1000?
I get it, there was a huge spike that started mid november, hit 20k, but it has since steadily returned to almost baseline.
Is this price still being this high a combination of bitcoin "enthusiasts" that think the price will go up forever? and any downswing is temporary?
I thought the ASIC miners would be developed soon, were much cheaper and more energy efficient to use and produced a better yield?

Been planning on getting in to PC gaming for months now. Just going to get a prebuilt with a GTX 1080 ti. Only way to not overspend.

It is absolutely due to bitcoin miners

But nvidia asked retailers to think of gamers first

Yeah, I've been trying to get one for 5 months.
I thought they were bad last year when the TI came out, then bitcoin exploded again and boom, damn things went up another 30 to 40%. Sitting at almost double the msrp.
Hell, low level cards are going for high level prices. I guess this saves me money. I won't be doing my normal every two to three year new build.

Your wait will be over soon. Crypto prices are falling and it isn't nearly as profitable to mine as it was a month ago. People are about to start unloading GPUs for pennies on the dollar. The same thing happened in 2013.

Yeah but they are gonna be worn to hell due to 247 mining huh
Posted on 2/8/18 at 7:24 am to jefforize
Maybe, but most of the guys mining undervolt their cards to save on electricity and to keep temp down. So wear and tear due to overheating is mostly a non-issue.

Most of those mining cards are less worn than cards games on

Bitcoin mining with video cards is unprofitable

Well when that crash happens let me know. I'm still working with my 7970. Needed an upgrade for a while.

Check out /r/hardwareswap periodically. A guy posted 7 or 8 1070s the other day for $350 a pop. They were all sold within the hour though. It's starting to happen now, you just have to look for them. Ebay is a good place to look but beware of the scammed and prices that look too good.

I disagree, but if you see deals like bruce posted a reply or two before this one, swipe them up. Crypto is down now, but its only going to go back up by the end of the year.

But profitability will keep going down on video card mining due to difficulty exponentially increasing and ASICs being released.
Two weeks ago profitability for a 1080ti was $4/day, now it's $2. The return on that initial investment is way too long since 1080tis are going for ~$900 right now

Speculation.
What Blue said is correct.

really glad I didn't wait and picked up my 1070 when I did.
it was sometime in April. then the Asian ethereum craze happened and everywhere went out of stock.
quit paying attention, and then looked at prices a few weeks ago. unbelievable. thousand fricking dollars for a 1080 or some nonsense.
lol.. my $379 card now being listed for:
$896.29· Jet.com
$986.00· Newegg.com
$699.89· NextWarehouse.com
$674.99· eBay
