Just thinking do you think physical media will make a comeback at some point if data caps become the norm. As game files and media get larger I wonder if the trend towards downloading games will stall

I appreciate the idea of owning your own media in a physical form, but digital media is so much more convenient. The only physical media I own are board games and vinyl

You don't have a DVD movie collection?

I have a weird steelbook obsession. And with Bestbuys Gamer Rewards allnew physical copies are cheaper than digital. New releases start at $47.99 (if original price is $59.99).

No. If you had access to the entire digital media universe would you still keep your physical media?

The problem with PSN is the downloads are insanely slow even if you have great internet.

I can download off Steam at 15 - 20 mbps at times. That's connected directly through ethernet, but my Xbox One is wifi and the download speeds are comparable.

I feel like the Switch is somewhere in between PSN and Xbox Live as far as download speeds go.

It's much easier to just pop in a disk like Assassin's Creed Black Flag and wait for it to install just the updates as opposed to a 20gb game.

Physical media on the Switch is awesome because the base game is on the disk and does not require an installation, so you are not taking up any storage space on the console by playing the games off the cards.

My movie collection is all blu ray (some DVDs). I just like the image and sound quality of a Blu Ray better than that of Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. I will have no qualms about paying $5 to rent a video stream off Amazon or something similar though.

I have, on the other hand, made the jump to streaming media for my music collection. I have a subscription to Google Play music and haven't bought a CD in probably 10 years.

With the advent of several smaller companies doing limited physical runs for digital only titles, I think the demand will always be there for physical games. Their importance has just diminished with technology.

As someone who enjoys collecting and displaying his gaming stuff, I hope physical media never 100% dies.

I understand why things are going digital, it's cheaper, faster, more convenient, all that jazz.

But I'd personally be willing to pay an extra $5-$10 to get the game in a case, with nice artwork, a nice manual, all that jazz.

Games don't even come with manuals anymore, it's really sad. many games throughout history have come with some really kick arse impressive manuals. I consider that part of the purchase and experience.

I can understand how most people wouldn't care and would want to go the cheaper route though.

Only thing that bugs me is that digital costs the same as physical. The digital versions should absolutely be cheaper than the physical version but it isn't.

It's all over the place. I'm on a from software kick and currently playing Bloodborne, for the complete edition with both dlc on sale a few weeks ago on PSN I paid $13, I wanted to jump back into dark souls 3 after words, and I went to buy it. That edition of BB is $39.99 physical

Just the base game is still 60$ on PSN, complete edition with dlc it's $90.

Went to GameStop at lunch just now and picked up a new,ds3 fire fades edition, base+all dlc, for $29.

I think both continue to exist

That pisses me off to no end. If I purchase a game, I shouldn’t have to download the whole damn game to play it.

Game file size is increasing at a faster rate than storage space on consoles. I would imagine next gen will be baseline 1TB bu by that point, the games will be 80+ gigs.

The Switch internal storage is just laughable. An SD card over 128gb will also pound your wallet. At least though if you buy physical games, the internal storage/SD card space is only for digital downloads, images, and save files.

I have made that same argument.

Digital should be cheaper. It is cheaper to distribute.

If they want people to transition to digital, then charge appropriately for it and have enough storage space available.

If people stop buying the digital games they'll lower prices, but people still eat it up at the same price as physical

You won't need an SD card over 128gb for the switch. Nintendo. Their games wont be as large as AAA titles on xbox and PS4 (lower res textures, better devs for the specific console, etc) so you wont need as much space. Hell, Zelda is only like 13gb and Splatoon 2 and Mario odyssey are just over 5gb.

and LA Noire required a 14GB download to run in addition to the cart. It'll be a mixed bag.
