Played audio of Trump saying "something like 10-12 years" to become a citizen for DACA people.

I am not sure of the context, but WTF. Mr President you damn well know that normal green card holders have a minimum 10 year wait to become citizens IF they do EVERYTHING right. How the frick are you going to give the same path to illegal immigrants as legal ones?

I can't go for this, even with an end to chain migration. frick this.

ETA for the cliche "you can't deport them all" crowd... they should have the option to stay, but without military service or voluntarily going back to country of origin and getting in line, there should be NO PATH to citizenship.

I don’t understand the few that are so outraged. These people are here, you’re not deporting them. It would be political suicide. So, hypothetically, the deal is...

Dems get:
Dreamers can stay
Pathway to citizenship - walk a straight line for 10 years

Reps get:
Wall
End chain imm
End lottery imm
Overhaul on immigration focusing on merit based imm

Sounds good to me

You can't deport these people. They're here. They're working legitimate jobs and many of them make significant contributions to their states, cities, and communities. We can't just get rid of these individuals by sending them back to their country of origin. Conservatives are about saving money. How much money would an operation of that size cost the taxpayer? More than it is worth IMHO.

I think it best to impose a merit based system on these Dreamers. If they have been found guilty of a felony they are deported. No questions asked. If they have been convicted of a misdemeanor within the last 3-5 years they should be given a probationary period and then have their clock start on the countdown to citizenship once that probationary period is over. Those who walk the straight and narrow for 10-15 years get their citizenship.

But we must draw a line. Once that wall is built and the border has been "secured," there must be no mercy for those who try to come here illegally. If they came over that wall the day after it was finished, and if it's found out some 20 years later that they are illegal, they're automatically deported. I don't care if they were only two when their parents took them across that border. They're gone.

Absolutely /\

NO citizenship for anyone who came here illegally - they have to "GO BACK" on their own = 'self-deport' and apply for naturalization just like a Norwegian has to do.

Nobody who has to be deported at USA expense/effort should EVER be eligible for citizenship - regardless - for EVER.

Mass 'self-deportation' is their ONLY 'path.'

I listened to Trump's sound bite yesterday evening, I had thought he said 10-12 years for dreamers?

eta I just checked, it is for dreamers only.

I agree with you. I understand you can't round them all up and deport. I'm good with giving them a window to register and giving them worker id numbers. Let them stay here legally, but with no path to citizenship. Goes for their anchor babies too. Congress needs to fix this mess.
