I think they will be hard pressed to not stretch Asik,

Not stretching Asik this summer is a little risky but very doable. I don't have hard cap calculations on my spreadsheet so that and Jrue's incentives could throw a monkey wrench into what I'm about to propose:

Step 1 - Dump Ajinca in the summer like QPon. A savings of $5.2 million
Step 2 - Trade Asik mid-january. If you do it by the halfway point only half of his salary goes against the tax. You save $5.6 million and since the team you dump him on is only taking $5.6 million this year and $3 next, you could probably pay something like Diallo + $5 million cash, which is much better than burning a first. You also shed another $1.5 million moving Diallo in the dump.

So that's a total payroll savings of $11.5 million. You start the season before these trades with a payroll of 125.1 million, about $2 million over the tax line, so you effectively have $9.5 million to play with. That should cover most or all of the Taxpayer MLE and 3-4 minimums.

Add Pels 2018 1st

I think the team needs to make a trade before the deadline. The team has no depth. This would be my ideal trade. The Pels would be better now, without taking on long-term salary. Mirotic just raved about Rondo. This team would be solid:

PG - Rondo/ Grant/ Nelson
SG - Holiday/ Moore
SF - Hill/ Miller
PF - Davis/ Mirotic/ Cunningham
C - Cousins

Yeah but you're just talking about dumping Asik next year before the trade deadline. What's the point in that? I want to get somethign back for him at that point.
I think you can find someone to take Ajinca and give back nothing, like with Qpon.

I was thinking of making this same post driving to work and get here to see it made already.

I think they can avoid the tax next year this way if you want. But it also allows for you to eat half of Asik's salary and then use him, E'twaun, the 2019 1st and the 2018 1st pick to make a more serious kind of move.
