It's funny that league PPG was so high in the bad boys years.
LINK
I think teams were maybe a little deeper back then as you didn't have as may rosters, but then again, there is such an influx of foreign talent that it's probably a wash. The league is in a good spot. Maybe the rules are scoring-friendly as you see the PPG up a bit now, but the cream of the crop will step up on D in the playoffs.

OP says there is no defense, yet Boston had 15 turnovers and 30 points at half?
It was not due to stifling defense by Philly. Boston was literally throwing the ball away nearly every possession and airballing layups. One time Boston tried to throw an alley oop and the ball slammed off the backboard, then Philly came down and missed a shot off the side of the backboard...Just a terrible product.
Actual skill has taken a backseat to athleticism and putting up as many shots as possible.

and putting up as many shots as possible.
They averaged 88 field goal attempts per game in the 80’s and 29 free throws per game.
Last season the league averaged 85 field goal attempts and 23 free throws per game.
So again, your assessment is incorrect.
Seriously, just go to YouTube and watch random games from the ‘80’s. The game was so much more up and down then.

NBA sucks, it's like watching And 1.
And another WIDE OPEN 3.
:rotflmao:
Zone has killed the NBA, nobody switches anymore. They just stand there - no fear of illegal defense.
Product is the worst in my 30 years of watching.

8 of the top 10 highest league average field goal percentages were from the 80’s. The other two were 1978 and 1979. And the two years from the 80’s that were outside the top 10 were 1988 and 1989, and those years ranked 11th and 12th. So the entire 80’s were 10 of the 12 highest field goal percentages in NBA history. Why? Because they played zero defense in the 80’s.
Could the emphasis on post play be related? fricking know it all dipshits.

It’s the complete fricking opposite, everyone switches on Pick and Rolls

Who in the league runs a zone defense outside of it being out of necessity?

wow so much stupid in this thread
I do admire pirate king's tenacity on defending CEO all over the site but the conviction of his MSB trolling is sorely lacking
picking a random game in the middle of january and using it as an indicator for criticizing the entire league is pretty funny

NBA just sucks these days.
I don't see how anyone could like this product unless they were mentally stunted or under the age of 18.
WWE is more enjoyable and about as believable.
NBA is guys standing around playing "soft zone" not guarding anybody while collecting massive paychecks.
It's an assault on our senses and what we believe to be right and wrong.
If you're willing to consume such shite, I feel no empathy that you are being fleeced...a fool and his money are soon parted.

I can entertain an argument that individual man defense may be worse, but team defense is demonstrably better. The fact that offenses understand geometry (short corner 3s) and shoot well from outside shouldn't be a knock on modern defenses.
The rule changes have made team defense easier, plain and simple.

Also, it's crazy how quickly the game evolves. 1980-81 to 1989-90 features 10 of the top 18 seasons in the last 50 years with respect to 2pt FG%. However, as the game has quickly moved away from mid-range 2s to 3s and lay-ups, the 2016-2017 season had the highest 2pt FG% in league history, and 2017-2018 is on pace to be even higher. 3pt FGAs are up 33% since 2013-14 already. The game is changing at a rapid pace.
If you want to talk about bad basketball, let's focus on the mid 90s or so to the mid 2000s. Or maybe the 1970s, where they quite literally were throwing up whatever they could get on a prayer and playing at breakneck speeds.
Lastly, the criticism of "everything is a foul" is complete horseshite. 2017-18 is on pace for the fewest FTAs in the history of the NBA. It is especially funny to hear people say "everything is a foul" these days while simultaneously bitching about walks/travels.
