Drew Brees contract

I have seen that Brees will cost the Saints $18 million against the cap even before he signs a new deal with whoever. If the Saints bring him back it will be 18 plus whatever he signs for. While they do have 22 million in current cap space I would think they would request a couple players to take paycuts/restructure their deals to create more free money. (Moorestead, Strief if he returns, Ingram)

It would be a net cap hit, would it not? Aka if he signed for 20 mill then the cap hit is not 38 mill - would still be 20. It's just the first 18 he signs for is already hitting us no matter if he's with us or not. I think...

I don't see too many players taking a paycut tbh, no reason for them to. I would think Brees will be resigned to around 20 million a year, 2-3 year deal. I'm pretty sure it's not gonna be 18 mill plus what he signs for, is that what you are thinking? I hate restructures tbh, unless you feel certain that player will fulfill his entire contract.
We just need to do like like last year, sign 1 top tier FA (like we did with Warford), resign Okafor and Kelemete, and get a few 2nd tier guys, and we will be golden. Remember all the guys on IR will be coming back.

If he re-signs with the team, the cap hit is only $6 million per year plus whatever is on his new contract.
It only hits $18 million in one year Iif he is not we-signed.

Why would other players take a pay cut to give Drew another huge contract. They deserve their pay just as much as Drew.

That's what I said

Well hopefully I was just reading it wrong as far as Drews cap #. I think the saints will ask a couple players to rework their contracts. Fleener is out imo. While cutting him will still count as 4.5 million it will still save the saints close to 4 million on top of that.

We currently are projected to have about $32-33 mil in cap space. The $22 mil figure is based on this past year's cap and it will go up at least $10 mil.
Brees already counts $6 mil against 2018's cap. If he hits FA he will count another $12 mil against the cap, taking our cap space from $32 to $20 mil.
They won't let that happen and he will get extended beforehand, but even if it did I mocked up a 5 year deal that voids after 2 years that would only add $10 mil on this year's cap ($5 mil salary and $5 mil signing bonus).
We're likely looking at around $20 mil in cap space after Brees resigns and before any other adjustments. We'll have plenty of space to make some big moves if we want to.

Need resolution
Nick Fairley 7 Million
Potential Restructures or Cuts
Zach Strief 3.8million/1.1 guaranteed
Nathan Stupar 2.1 million/400K guaranteed
Coby Fleener 8 million/4.8 guaranteed
Thomas Morestead 4.8 million/700K guaranteed
Saints have leverage on several players in order to create additional cap space. Many of these guys would probably agree to a pay cut if you raised their guarantees.

Yeah that's correct. We will get hit with an 18 mill cap regardless. But anything over 18 million will just add. So if we sign for 20 million it's only a 20 million cap hit. If he walked it would be an 18 million cap hit.

That's not correct.
He currently counts $6 mil against the cap, and if he hits FA he'll count another $12 mil on the cap, bringing it from $32 mil to $20 mil in space.
If he then signs a new deal that gives him $20 mil in salary and new bonuses this year we'd have no cap left.
Even if we used my hypothetical contract which is about as low as they can get his cap number with really hurting next year and the year after we'd still be left with only $10 mil in space. For reference that'd be $18 mil old money and $10 mil new money for $28 mil total ($6 mil of that already counting on the cap).
That's why it's vital he extends before FA.

U shouldn't worry about Brees. He will sign with the Saints. Payton and Brees are tight.

Wrong, so wrong.

If you guys think Drew is signing for anything less than 25 mill a year, your crazy. I figure with the qb market it will be 26-28 mill a year.

Exactly, If he signs after FA starts we're looking at a cap hit of 28mil+ easily. which means we'd have what 4mil to use?
Giving him a 5yr contract, 40mil signing bonus and 3mil base salary before FA only hits us for 17mil.
15mil of cap space is enough to get 3 quality starters on backloaded contracts. 11mil extra if we do this before FA, meaning 2 quality starters.
That's the difference between getting Trey Burton or Trey Burton, Paul Richardson, and Nigel Bradham.
