Second straight year that all of us have let that common thought of "I think Roger may be done here" creep in our minds. Once again, he finds a way to grind out a couple of games and go to that rarified level that only a few players in the sport have ever reached. The fact that he can still have ability and toughness to do that at 36 is just incredible.

All hail the GOAT

Roger getting quite emotional. There it is, he lost it. Onions over here too, Roger.

Nah. 20 is a good stopping point.

Red arse alert. Don't worry Bobby, you can have your day when Rafa takes another French.

If I didn't like Fed, I would be complaining that they closed the roof due to heat for a night match.

If I didn't like Fed, I'd say something about being one of the easiest paths to a final in a while. But I don't want to give the haters ammo.

After this tournament, I will never complain about a Rafa joke draw ever again.

It’s not Fed’s fault people didn’t play to seeding. Am puzzled about the roof though. I’m hoping they go back to16 seeds and s-curve them then fill by draw the rest

What an arse whipping in this 5th.

I watched just two portions of this match. I saw a good chunk of the first set, and smug was just absolutely beating the funk out of cilic. Johnny Mac was sort of clowning on chilly a little bit -- or perhaps I could just characterize it as a dismissive tone -- but I'm not so sure it wasn't more about smug coming out of the gate guns blazing. Smug does tend to do that. He's historically a much better starter than finisher.*

Early in the second set, chilly finally started to get a hold of himself. I watched until 3-3. Chilly was holding serve, but smug was still outplaying him and holding serve with much greater ease than chilly. Not wanting to see a routining that appeared inevitable, I turned it off and went and banged this really hot girl. I mean, I had a threesome with two really hot girls and came inside both of them. It was awesome.

I checked back in a bit later.....actually at the very start of the 5th set. I was really surprised. Chilly appeared to be outplaying him and looked poised. i was thinking he had it. But then in the second game, he double faulted twice and played a couple other loose points, and got broken despite looking like the more solid player at that stage.

At that point I knew it was a done deal. That was the momentum changer and I couldn't imagine cilic breaking back.

So went back to my room and had a reverse gangbang with not one, or two, but three other smoking hot solid 10 girls. Came thrice. Once inside each. Only because they begged.

I checked back 20 or so minutes later with a feeling that it would be the trophy ceremony and that a cloud of smug would have moved over Rod Laver Arena...and I was right..

Bummer we couldn't get a Roger/Rafa repeat, but credit to cilic for making it a match.

+1
If Rafa couldn't make it to the final, that's on him.

Federer isn't stopping. At the level he's playing at, he'd be foolish to retire now.

I mean, Fed fans said the same thing about Nadal's 2017 US Open title, so it's even now.

Well, it's just a shame that Nadal let a lower seeded player whip his arse. Guess he wasn't deserving to be in the AO final this year.

It was definitely an oddball match. I thought early on it was going to be a replay of Wimbledon, but Cilic got it back together. No doubt both guys suffered from nerves at one time or another. Cilic played much better from behind than when he would draw even or come within striking distance, and Fed turned it on when things got dicey.

Fed's forward style is just amazing - I haven't looked at stats, but my impression is that he didn't come to net a whole lot this match, but what he did do was play the game from a very offensive position relative to the baseline. Cilic is a huge hitter, and the way Fed short hops the ball and gets it back so quickly is just devastating. To me he takes away time from his opponent so much better than anyone else. This and his serve in sets 1,3 and 5 is what carried the day.
