Here's a timeline of how that arrest happened:
About 1:00 a.m.: An off-duty police officer encountered a man in the hotel lobby. The man was reportedly drunk and acting belligerent.
1:30 a.m.: The off-duty officer made a call for "urgent backup" when attempts to get the man to return to his room failed.
About 2:00 a.m.: Officers arrived at the hotel to assist with the man. They quickly discovered the man had several weapons and ammunition in his hotel room. A search of his vehicle also turned up weapons and ammunition.
2:49 a.m.: The suspect was transported to Southeast Jail for questioning.
Blind link .... :)~

According to investigators, Ziemba said he was at the hotel to celebrate New Year's Eve and brought the weapons with him so they wouldn't get stolen.
The Houston Police Department does not believe he had any intent to use them based on the amount of ammunition and other pieces of the investigation.

So did he have a gun on him or what? He was charged with unlawful carry, right?
So thankfully he isn’t a terrorist or anything, but still wouldn’t want to be around him with a gun if he can’t cwrry responsibly.
Sounds like the initial report of unlawful carry was wrong?

Officers were initially called to the hotel when an off-duty Houston police officer reported an encounter with a belligerent man acting erratically.
That man was allegedly Ziemba.
When attempts to subdue the man failed, the officer called for what's been described as urgent backup around 1:30 a.m.
Investigators said the man was taken into custody at the hotel, where they found several weapons and ammunition in his room.
Investigators said they also found weapons inside his vehicle.
Takes weapons to his room so they won't get stolen. Leaves weapons in his truck.
This is sketchy as frick.
I guess the 3 gun competition is out of the picture.

how is he arrested for trespassing if he was a paid guest of the hotel?
I can understand charges of public drunkenness, which given the time of year is common and should be disregarded...
only charge I can see he deserved is if he really assaulted a peace officer...only body cam footage will shed the truth on that one.

People will see the headline and automatically jump to the conclusion that he was planning another attack like Vegas.
I wonder why

The man was arrested for unlawfully carrying a weapon and trespassing. When investigators looked into his room further, they located an AR-15, a shotgun, a handgun and lots of ammunition, Macintosh said.

Yeah, there a hundred lawful explanations about having those weapons in your hotel room, but it makes us all feel safer when they sensationalize this type of thing.
Makes it OK to give local PD's rocket launchers in the minds of 80+ year old's who watch Fox News all day.

Did the guy have one of those "fully semi-automatic" weapons Whoopi Goldberg and the other fat white lady on the view hate so much?

a collection of weapons and military equipment stored by a country, person, or group.
Here you go:
Definition of collection:
a : something collected; especially : an accumulation of objects gathered for study, comparison, or exhibition or as a hobby
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/collection
Definition of accumulate
accumulated; accumulating
transitive verb
: to gather or pile up especially little by little : amass
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/accumulate
A rifle, a shotgun and a pistol is not a pile, and I doubt people would describe someone attaining three firearms as amassing them.

No way he could do what those Saudis did in Las Vegas with that arsenal.

After his second drunken fit of carrying on in the lobby the manager told him to pack his bags and leave. He still wouln't and had to be escorted up to his room by the cops and that's when they found the "arsenal".

Three guns doesn’t make an arsenal.
Majorly overblown by media.

Sounds like the cops were full of shite and the dude was just drunk
quote:
But less than 24 hours before the festivities for hundreds of expected revelers, 49-year-old Russell Lawrence Ziemba, who reeked of alcohol and slurred his speech after drinking at the hotel bar, was told he he had to leave the hotel. Police showed up around 1:30 a.m. and escorted him to his room to retrieve his belongings, and spotted several shotgun shells and a magazine for an assault rifle on a desk - they eventually found a shotgun, a semi-automatic handgun and a military-style assault rifle.
quote:
That troubling combination of factors led prosecutors to petition a Harris County magistrate judge to hold Ziemba without bail, fearing he was planning a repeat of the earlier October massacre of 58 people in Las Vegas. In that mass shooting, a retired IRS agent opened fire from a high-rise hotel window on hundreds of fans attending a nearby music festival before killing himself. This week Ziemba, a Gulf War veteran awarded a Bronze Star, was cleared of felony charges after a grand jury saw the surveillance video and determined there was not enough evidence to continue prosecuting him. So on Wednesday, state District Judge Brad Hart ordered police to return Ziemba's 12 gauge shotgun, a semi-automatic Glock .380 pistol and his AR-15 assault-style rifle, confirmed Ziemba's defense attorney, Danny Easterling.
