So the remnants of the empire fled to the unknown regions and eventually made Snoke the supreme leader. Wouldn't you think they'd be wary of another dark force leader? I'd assume they'd want a capable military dictator that wasn't force sensitive

Just accept it.

There is no explanation.

Better question, how did the Republic become so inept? Did they not build their forces up at all?

well you can ask the same questions of the Republic

why would they trust Leia to lead them after she lost control of the Republic?

Leia was pushed out after if was revealed Darth Vader was her father

The new republic didn't want to become a new empire and so kept its military down.(dumb I know)

The rebellion was to restore the Senate. Most of the large ships were from Mon Calamari. Did they join the first order?
It seems odd that the world would say.
Oh these guys killed all the senators and resistance, they are the leaders now.

I'm guessing the Trade Federation returned and took overover.

Where did you come up with the scenario of the question? Is that even official or speculation?

Only a handful of people (Yoda, Vader, Obi wan, maybe Tarkin) knew Palpatine was force sensitive. He never showed it and whenever he did, he had the people who saw it killed. I don't even think his guards knew.

Snoke's guards, Hux, and people on the bridge knew, but it's unclear if anyone else did.

They didn't need starkiller base, they had the 10 mile wide ship.

..though great question. They blew up one star system.
Then they lost their home base and most of their people.
Being generous even IF a month passed I can't see how they were now in control.

I do remember they lost"the fleet" in force awakens, because you know, when you have thousands of planets to look after, it's best to keep your fleet in one place.
