No one is saying it should be forced that you but from factory. The fact that it is illegal is the issue. Yes, you don't typically buy things from a factory as they aren't set up for it and require large volume purchases. So a distribution system falls into place. But the auto industry is one of the only things I know of where the distribution system is a legal requirement. The option of circumventing the distribution network would certainly cause some sort of competition and price drop. But special interest is the only thing stopping it.
