If you decide on a .270, get a pair of tennis shoes to track your deer with. I do not like a 270. Had to help too many folks "find" deer with those guns.

Only on the OB is the .243 a whitetail deathray and the .270 not adequate.
.270 is a fantastic deer caliber and with the right bullets works for elk as well.

ETA: to the OP, I'm a 270 guy, but I'd never fault a guy picking the 308 either.
