How do people get paid off YouTube videos?

A guy I casually know from the gym apparently makes videos of him playing bball and just goofing around, and he gets like 800,000 views. Is this enough to make decent money from ads or whatever? I was shocked when I saw the amount of views, comments, and subscribers.

# of views determines the level and frequency of ads that play. You get paid from that basically.

You should have asked him.

Let's just say I have 5-6 videos that have 800,000 views. Give me an idea of what that monetizes out to be...

Not sure. I saw an article about some young chick in Cali that makes play doh on YouTube and is a millionaire for it.

Yes. Thets enough. I posted a video of Blue Angels performance Got an email from YouTube once if hit 1,200 views asking me to sign a few forms to start getting paid from it.
I never sent the forms back so I don't know the specifics.

Google says roughly $2000/1 million views with YouTube taking 45% of that

IMO, thats what made you tube the dumpster fire that it is today.

There's lots of people who make a living off of youtube, Key West Kayak makes a living from it fishing the Florida Keys everyday. A lot of woodworkers too. Some of them have Patreon Supporters as well.

My old roommate would make videos of him kicking soccer balls and get like 40 bucks a month

This, also I want to say sometime last year or so YouTube cut back on how much they pay their content creators so people don't usually make as much as they used to.
You make the bulk of your money off of "donations" via Patreon and/or you open an online store and sell merchandise. For Patreon to make you decent money for example you'll announce on your YT videos that you have a "special giveaway" (like an Xbox or a GoPro etc.) for your Patreon donors. That causes people who aren't donors to want to donate $5 or $10 here and there for a chance to win. Also by offering "exclusive content" for Patreon subscribers only you'll have a decent chance of increasing revenue by requesting money from your viewers to view that content.

There are equations (don't know them) that you can use based on number of subscribers and number of views per video. It has to do with the amount of traffic you create for the site and ad revenue

If only I was photogenic. Could do my own trailer park version of that kardashian shite

The top youtuber (pewdiepie) in the world makes upward of 12 million. Those that round out the top 10 highest grossing stars all make over 3 million. The "less popular" but still well known stars on youtube mostly all make well over six figures.

I read that 1 mill views = approx. $2,000 but youtube takes about 1/2 of that.

Not as much as sucking dick on a webcam. You should give that a try first.

Lol this question is very 2009. Anyway you obviously get paid from the ad revenue you create just like any site. The top creators get paid a higher rate. The smart YouTubers have several other revenue streams like merchandise, appearances, brand deals etc.
Also the ad revenue is not based on just views, watch time matters too.

I used to get $2 for every 1k views. Nothing if a vid didn't reach that. I think thats low end, too. Places pay a lot more if you get the right contract.
