Looking at Vortex Viper or Leupold VX3i but I'm open to others. I am mainly looking for one that works well in low light.
I also have a friend that has an older Leupold Vari-X IIc 50mm that he will sell for $200. Is that a good deal and a good scope for me needs?

The older Leupold scopes that have the "gold ring" on them supposedly have an unconditional lifetime warranty, or so I am told. If it's in good shape and you like the reticle I'd definitely consider it.

I would go with the vx3, but i also know nothing about the Vortex. Folks on here really like it.

I looked at a Leupold vx3i 50mm recently, but it wasn't under $500. I almost bought it, but I really liked the Nikon Prostaff 7 4-16 x 50mm BDC for just under $500. Can't go wrong with either, but the prostaff 7 is much better than most of the previous Prostaffs. I have used it in low light with no problem and the BDC has been very accurate at the range.

I have had pretty good success with Nikon Monarch scopes. Haven't bought one in a few years, but then it was under 400 for a 50mm objective.

I just got this cabelas meopta...Mounted it on 300Mag..
Nice scope.. good eye relief.
The reticle is ok even though Ill never use the wind drift lines.
The scope is very clear for long range shots.
Only thing I don't necessarily like is the sweet spot for full view seems like a tight window. I adjusted the scope several times in different positions to see what was best for my cheek location

I bought a VX-3i from midway for $400 a couple months ago. Best deal I ever saw on a scope.

Yes that it.
And the used one does have the gold ring. I think it's been rebuilt.

Nikon has this same warranty for all their lines.
