Saban is full of shite. He would be crying up a storm right now if he were left out this year. Hell, he had to go on ESPN and bitch and moan just to get his team in. He's such a whiny little bitch.

6 max but even then the current system is fine with 4.

Conference champs + BYEs for the top seeds is a perfect system.
Then we need to cut the 12 regular season games to 11.

And get all 5 power 5 conferences to play 9 conference games.

And don't let us play FCS teams.

That's the ONLY way I'd be ok with conference champs being an auto bid. I still wouldn't be happy with it, but it would be WAY better than people complaining about CCGs with the system we have now.

The SEC could really step up and cement the 9 conference game schedule. We could validate it even though we'd be late af to it.

We look like pussies at the moment. I don't like it.

And next season when Saban is left out he will be politicizing for expansion. Such a snake oil piece of lying shite. Remember when last year he said you should win your conference to get in. But not this year. Somehow this year is different

Of course they would defend a system that is made to protect their programs

you realize if the playoffs expanded it would be even MORE likely for their teams to get in on a yearly basis, right?

I personally think 6 would be perfect. The Power 5 champs and one at large. Top 2 seeds get a bye. This move would probably force ND to join a conference.

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind if they did away with all these meaningless Bowl games that the kids don’t GAF about.
Most of the kids do care about those games. A lot of them have no shot of getting into one of the big bowls. I really don't understand why people want to get rid of bowls. What is it hurting?

Bowl practices are vital to young player development

Get rid of bowls and the quality of the sport goes down

The competitive purpose of the playoff was to protect the 12-1 conference champion that finished 3rd. The 4th team is really only a matter of needing to complete a bracket.

If you can't get in that 4 solidly, you really don't have any business playing for the national championship. Win your games in the regular season.

Except they already play a "conference schedule" and the ACC places them into bowls. Also, would you force BYU and Army in to a conference as well?

The force Notre Dame argument is bs and stupid.

It's currently possible for a power 5 conference champ to go undefeated and miss the playoffs. That's ridiculous

It is dumb that anyone goes unbeaten and misses the playoff.

Has an undefeated power 5 conference champ ever finished 5th?

That's so unlikely that it's not worth worrying about.

The fact that it's possible should be enough to change the format. And I agree with sms, if any team is undefeated they deserve a shot. The very best group of 5 teams have shown that they can hang with the power 5 schools in the past. If they go undefeated, they should be in the playoff

Do you really think UCF could hang with a locked-in Clemson? This isn't basketball. The bigger and faster team wins way more often than not.

As a practical matter, when are you going to play this extra game?

The most common model I see is around mid-December. For the players, that is right in the middle of exams. They're theoretically students, after all. In the football calendar, that is right in the middle of the new recruiting signing period. Recruiting may not be interesting to the casual fan but is the lifeblood of the sport. You would likely have to totally change the recruiting calendar to accommodate the extra playoff game.

You really want to do all this so that 4 teams that aren't as qualified anyway get to take their hail mary shot at a national championship?

When you get preferential treatment like Saban does, why want more teams to compete with in the playoffs?

I have no idea. Did you think that Boise would hang with Oklahoma? Utah with Bama? Sure I think Clemson would win, but I'd like to see them settle it on the field.

They already have bowl games starting on the 16th. That doesn't seem to be a factor.

Same as above, there would be no reason to change any of that as you already have bowl games going on during the weekends you would put that first round of games.

I think it should be all of the 10 Champions in FBS and then 2 At Larges or 24 with all the champions and 14 at larges. If we are truly finding a national champion then all Champions need to be invited. If we are just finding the best team, which Hocutt is doing, then call the winner something besides National Champion.

Kirby Hocutt has destroyed any and all credibility that this committee had. Jeff Long did it correctly. It is sad that the very first metric they said they would use has been disregarded by Hocutt and not explained why.

Fine find best team, but what is best team? Best win/loss? Most pro prospects? Best coaches? Prettiest uniforms? Give us something so we know what they are looking for and I think people will be happy. The FCS, NCAA Basketball, Baseball, and D2 D3 FB committees tell you what they value, but Hocutt's committee has not yet.
