Yeah, I guess that's why that white woman who applied to UT law and got denied while other minorities got accepted with lower grades sued UT.

quote:
A job applicant with a name that sounds like it might belong to an African-American - say, Lakisha Washington or Jamal Jones - can find it harder to get a job. Despite laws against discrimination, affirmative action, a degree of employer enlightenment, and the desire by some businesses to enhance profits by hiring those most qualified regardless of race, African-Americans are twice as likely as whites to be unemployed and they earn nearly 25 percent less when they are employed.
quote:
In response to help-wanted ads in Chicago and Boston newspapers, they sent resumes with either African-American- or white-sounding names and then measured the number of callbacks each resume received for interviews.
quote:
the authors responded to more than 1,300 employment ads in the sales, administrative support, clerical, and customer services job categories, sending out nearly 5,000 resumes. The ads covered a large spectrum of job quality, from cashier work at retail establishments and clerical work in a mailroom to office and sales management positions.
quote:
Job applicants with white names needed to send about 10 resumes to get one callback; those with African-American names needed to send around 15 resumes to get one callback. This would suggest either employer prejudice or employer perception that race signals lower productivity.
quote:
The 50 percent gap in callback rates is statistically very significant, It indicates that a white name yields as many more callbacks as an additional eight years of experience. Race, the authors add, also affects the reward to having a better resume. Whites with higher quality resumes received 30 percent more callbacks than whites with lower quality resumes. But the positive impact of a better resume for those with Africa-American names was much smaller.
quote:
"While one may have expected that improved credentials may alleviate employers' fear that African-American applicants are deficient in some unobservable skills, this is not the case in our data," the authors write. "Discrimination therefore appears to bite twice, making it harder not only for African-Americans to find a job but also to improve their employability."
quote:
The experiment, conducted between July 2001 and January 2002, reveals several other aspects of discrimination. If the fictitious resume indicates that the applicant lives in a wealthier, or more educated, or more-white neighborhood, the callback rate rises.
quote:
Further, discrimination levels are statistically uniform across all the occupation and industry categories covered in the experiment. Federal contractors, sometimes regarded as more severely constrained by affirmative action laws, do not discriminate less. Neither do larger employers, or employers who explicitly state that they are "Equal Opportunity Employer" in their ads.
quote:
The advantage of their study, the authors note, is that it relies on resumes, not actual people applying for jobs, to test discrimination. A race is randomly assigned to each resume. Any differences in response are due solely to the race manipulation and not to other characteristics of a real person. Also, the study has a large sample size, compared to tests of discrimination with real applicants.
One weakness of the study is that it simply measures callbacks for interviews, not whether an applicant gets the job and what the wage for a successful applicant would be. So the results cannot be translated into hiring rates or earnings. Another problem of the study is that newspaper ads represent only one channel for job search.

But make up a majority of the violent criminals
2 and 3 should've been combined.
War on drugs is not institutional racism. Crackheads make up a large part of the burglaries in Baton Rouge. When they get arrested, they get charged with any drug paraphernalia (thus the drug charge). Crackheads make up the most repeat offenders. Of course you're going to have more "Crack" offenders in jail. STILL NOT INSTITUTIONALIZED RACISM.

so black people like drugs more than responsible white people. COLOR me chocked
Now for the institutional racism you were talking about earlier.

Neither special circumstances nor grades were determinative. Of the 841 students admitted under these criteria, 47 had worse AI/PAI scores (a combination of the holistic measure, grades, and test scores) than Fisher, and 42 of them were white. On the other end, UT rejected 168 black and Latino students with scores equal to or better than Fisher’s.*

In Texas the rich areas pay higher property taxes and their taxes are evened out to the poor schools. And the poors still manage to do terrible in school, and even ruin the other schools that allow a few of them to go there. (My old high school has gotten worse every year in the past 10 years)

law enforcement profiling
Law enforcement go after who commit the crimes. If blacks weren't 13% of the population and responsible for almost half of the crime they wouldn't get profiled for crime. Plus, law enforcement pulls over anybody of any color who is dressed questionable, I know well dressed black men that have never had problems with the law. I know some that are cops themselves. Not racism.

I have probably made more since first posting in this thread than you will gross this week. You may want to call that racism, but i call it prolonged work ethic, dedication, and not having a victim complex.
Also i have a pretty sweet name. Lets be honest though, anyone who has the mental capacity to name their child Laquantarius La Junior, probably isnt the type person to set their kids up for success.

Racism either exist or it doesn't. There are not degrees of racism.
Roverrange adequately addressed degrees of racism in people. If your argument is that any existence of racism makes a person a racist, then 100% of humankind is racist, and this discussion is mute.
And in terms of nations, cultures, and races there’s degrees. For instance China and Japan are highly racist cultures, nations, and races.
Glad you agree that Affirmative Action and anti Asian discrimination by Universities is modern institutional discrimination. But I fail to see how this affects immigration except from Asian countries.
The example of the war on drugs is false. Just because the vast majority of inmates resulting from the war on murder are males, doesn’t prove discrimination against males. It proves that males vastly outnumber females committing murder.

Too many people believe that slavery is a “peculiar institution.” That’s what Kenneth Stampp called slavery in his book, “Peculiar Institution: Slavery in the Ante-Bellum South.” But slavery is by no means peculiar, odd or unusual. It was common among ancient peoples such as the Egyptians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Hittites, Greeks, Persians, Armenians and many others. Large numbers of Christians were enslaved during the Ottoman wars in Europe. White slaves were common in Europe from the Dark Ages to the Middle Ages. It was only after A.D. 1600 that Europeans joined with Arabs and Africans and started the Atlantic slave trade. As David P. Forsythe wrote in his book, “The Globalist,” “The fact remained that at the beginning of the nineteenth century an estimated three-quarters of all people alive were trapped in bondage against their will either in some form of slavery or serfdom.”
While slavery constitutes one of the grossest encroachments on human liberty, it is by no means unique or restricted to the Western world or United States, as many liberal academics would have us believe. Much of their indoctrination of our young people, at all levels of education, paints our nation’s founders as racist adherents to slavery, but the story is not so simple.
At the time of the 1787 Constitutional Convention, slaves were about 40 percent of the population of the Southern colonies. Apportionment in the House of Representatives and the number of electoral votes each state would have in presidential elections would be based upon population. Southern delegates to the convention wanted slaves to be counted as one person. Northern delegates to the convention, and those opposed to slavery, wanted only free persons of each state to be counted for the purposes of apportionment in the House of Representatives and the Electoral College. The compromise reached was that each slave would be counted as only three-fifths of a person.
Many criticize this compromise as proof of racism. My question to these grossly uninformed critics is whether they would have found it more preferable for slaves to be counted as whole persons. Slaves counted as whole persons would have given slaveholding Southern states much more political power. Or, would the critics of the founders prefer that the Northern delegates not compromise and not allow slaves to be counted at all. If they did, it is likely that the Constitution would have not been ratified. Thus, the question emerges is whether blacks would be better off with Northern states having gone their way and Southern states having gone theirs, resulting in no U.S. Constitution and no Union? Unlike today’s pseudointellectuals, black abolitionist Frederick Douglass understood the compromise, saying that the three-fifths clause was “a downright disability laid upon the slaveholding states” that deprived them of “two-fifths of their natural basis of representation.”
Douglass’ vision was shared by Patrick Henry and others. Henry said, expressing the reality of the three-fifths compromise, “As much as I deplore slavery, I see that prudence forbids its abolition.” With this union, Congress at least had the power to abolish slave trade by 1808. According to delegate James Wilson, many believed the anti-slave-trade clause laid “the foundation for banishing slavery out of this country.” Many of the founders abhorred slavery. Their statements can be read on my website, walterewilliams.com.
The most unique aspect of slavery in the Western world was the moral outrage against it, which began to emerge in the 18th century and led to massive elimination efforts. It was Britain’s military sea power that put an end to the slave trade. And our country fought a costly war that brought an end to slavery. Unfortunately, these facts about slavery are not in the lessons taught in our schools and colleges. Instead, there is gross misrepresentation and suggestion that slavery was a uniquely American practice.

See this is when I know y'all can't handle the truth. I struck a nerve. So here come the personal insults. You know nothing about me but will assume you make more money than me. I highly doubt your claim is true, but in highly unlikely event it is, I pity you. You determine your self worth by claiming to make more money than a black person on the internet. I am out I just can't deal with this level of ignorance. Have a nice day and continue making that bank!

I am glad you understand that. Now if this next graphic shows drug use rate wise is the same between both black and white why does the black population account for the vast majority of the drug convictions. I'll hang up an listen big bank hank.

Hahaha. I assumed i made more money than you because you come off as a perpetual victim, and because the tax bracket im in taxes me more than a lot of people make. Its not an insult to you, and i never assumed you were balck. I have seen plenty of guilty white people make this vehement argument. your assumption that i assumed you are black, is in and of itself, racist.

Kind of sickening that you're laughing about this and claiming to strike nerves. Working men and women of this country are sick of being called racist for something that occurred YEARS ago by both blacks and whites. I am sick of losing 40% of my paycheck to cover social programs and yet I am the racist for questioning institutional racism. Some of my closest friends are hard working black dudes who get it. They face racism today because of people like you.
