If anyone on this board actually understood the global economy and believed in free trade, you’d understand why this isn’t necessarily a good thing for our country.

I suppose I’m glad he’s following up on his promises though, but this really only helps people holding manufacturing jobs who are unable to transfer their skills or learn new ones ... it doesn’t help our economy as a whole.

ETA: Yes, please let the downvotes rain.

It’s hilarious how this board has shifted from being for free trade and making America economically stronger to supporting asinine protectionist policies that only benefit small subsets of society who are too stubborn and unwilling to change their professions to get with the times, all because Trump is President.

I hope none of you downvoting classify yourselves as classical liberals, libertarians, or even Republicans.

You started with:

quote:

this really only helps people holding manufacturing jobs who are unable to transfer their skills or learn new ones

And added:

quote:

that only benefit small subsets of society who are too stubborn and unwilling to change their professions to get with the times

quote:

all because Trump is President.

I want to ad hom you for this TOTALLY ignorant statement so badly but I’ll bite my tongue.

Name one, just one protectionist policy Trump has implemented. You won’t be able to.

In fact on the domestic front it’s been just the opposite in terms of deregulation (which means more freedom).

On the trade front it’s been more free than since Reagan. Trump is helping broker deals around the world and lowering import tariffs to boot. For example, his last Asian trip he brokered $250 million in trade with China and get this he renegotiated Chinese tariffs from 17.9% to 7%.

That is not protectionism.

and who precisely are these people?

quote:

asinine protectionist policies
so you think it's ok to move hq or factories overseas and still primarily do business in the us to circumvent regulations? explain how that's fair to us taxpayers and how that's fair to businesses that stay here but can't compete.

quote:

small subsets of society who are too stubborn and unwilling to change their professions
first, stubborn is on them, not trump's policies. second, specifically which economic sector are you referring to? iow, which businesses are dead ends that are being enabled by trump's policies which will end up hurting the economy as a whole? let me guess - COAL.

you're missing the point of a free economy. if a business is a dead end, even if it is propped up by the prez/govt, the market won't support it. the principle is to provide a relevant, useful product in an efficient and cost effective manner. trump's policies are just opening up the marketplace for more freedom and trying to level the playing field both domestically and internationally. it just doesn't take a genius to see that businesses are optimistic about this. when that happens, they hire more, produce more which creates competition and the consumer benefits.

I’m not downvoting you but I’m for America winning. I think manufacturing jobs coming back is winning. That’s an important class of people to keep employed. As far as what label people try to ascribe me, that’s your prerogative.

As far as free trade is concerned, you have to protect your assets. You also want to grow good jobs if can. The government shouldn’t be restricting the market. There’s other people are playing the game too. The tax cuts have a good shot at helping this outcome. You’ve got to legislate.

So your premise is that no one acquires skills in manufacturing jobs?

The US can’t maintain a healthy job market while running a 600 billion dollar trade deficit. The math over the long haul doesn’t work for American workers or consumers.
