re: U.S. private employment growth eases but manufacturing shines: ADP

Ford just announced they are moving the electrical car production to Mexico.
I guess you didn't read the whole article.
quote:
Ford Motor Co. plans to produce a future electric car in Mexico rather than make it in the U.S., reversing plans announced in January to make its Flat Rock, Mich., assembly plant near Detroit its main electric-vehicle production site.
Instead, Ford will convert that suburban Detroit factory into a manufacturing hub for future driverless vehicles, a top company official said. And it plans to create a dedicated assembly line for electric vehicles at its plant in Cuautitlan, Mexico, with production slated to begin in 2020.
Yes, Ford is moving its electric vehicle production to Mexico, but Michigan is not losing any jobs.
quote:LINK
Redirecting electric-vehicle production south of the border is about more than shaving costs. The move will make room for the Flat Rock factory to serve as Ford’s “center of excellence” for autonomous vehicles, Ford President of Global Markets Jim Farley said in an interview.
Ford will boost investment in that plant to $900 million, from $700 million originally planned. The investment will result in 850 new jobs, up from the 700 jobs Ford pegged previously under the original electric-vehicle plan for Flat Rock.
In fact, Michigan could potentially gain 150 jobs more than if planned. So this still qualifies as MAGA biotch MAGA!

No where did I say Obama did better.
All I’m saying is Trump could be doing much better if he wasn’t such a populist on certain economic topics.
Factor endowments ... labor, land, capital, technology.
We don’t have a comparative advantage in manufacturing labor, therefore it makes no sense for us to spend so much time and effort putting eggs in that basket.
We are better off as a nation focusing on capital and technology and then trading for manufactured goods. This is rock solid economic theory that the right used to support until Trump.

Too late. Obama earned that distinction on his own already.

My anger is directed at people on this board who claim to hold one political and economic ideology but put their beliefs to the side just because Trump is President.
As far as your quotes, they are often either unable, unwilling, or both.

It’s hilarious how this board has shifted from being for free trade and making America economically stronger to supporting asinine protectionist policies that only benefit small subsets of society who are too stubborn and unwilling to change their professions to get with the times, all because Trump is President.
I want to ad hom you for this TOTALLY ignorant statement so badly but I’ll bite my tongue.
Name one, just one protectionist policy Trump has implemented. You won’t be able to.
In fact on the domestic front it’s been just the opposite in terms of deregulation (which means more freedom).
On the trade front it’s been more free than since Reagan. Trump is helping broker deals around the world and lowering import tariffs to boot. For example, his last Asian trip he brokered $250 million in trade with China and get this he renegotiated Chinese tariffs from 17.9% to 7%.
That is not protectionism.

quote:and who precisely are these people?
this really only helps people holding manufacturing jobs who are unable to transfer their skills or learn new ones
quote:so you think it's ok to move hq or factories overseas and still primarily do business in the us to circumvent regulations? explain how that's fair to us taxpayers and how that's fair to businesses that stay here but can't compete.
asinine protectionist policies
quote:first, stubborn is on them, not trump's policies. second, specifically which economic sector are you referring to? iow, which businesses are dead ends that are being enabled by trump's policies which will end up hurting the economy as a whole? let me guess - COAL.
small subsets of society who are too stubborn and unwilling to change their professions
you're missing the point of a free economy. if a business is a dead end, even if it is propped up by the prez/govt, the market won't support it. the principle is to provide a relevant, useful product in an efficient and cost effective manner. trump's policies are just opening up the marketplace for more freedom and trying to level the playing field both domestically and internationally. it just doesn't take a genius to see that businesses are optimistic about this. when that happens, they hire more, produce more which creates competition and the consumer benefits.

quote:it's not that we're doing that. it's that trump is trying to open up all avenues.
We don’t have a comparative advantage in manufacturing labor, therefore it makes no sense for us to spend so much time and effort putting eggs in that basket.
quote:tell this to the businesses in the market, not trump. the point is to get govt out of the way and let the market decide what is "better off"
We are better off as a nation focusing on capital and technology and then trading for manufactured goods.

I’m not downvoting you but I’m for America winning. I think manufacturing jobs coming back is winning. That’s an important class of people to keep employed. As far as what label people try to ascribe me, that’s your prerogative.
As far as free trade is concerned, you have to protect your assets. You also want to grow good jobs if can. The government shouldn’t be restricting the market. There’s other people are playing the game too. The tax cuts have a good shot at helping this outcome. You’ve got to legislate.

perspective: The U.S. economy added 211,000 jobs in Nov. of 2015. It added 190,000 jobs in Nov. of 2017.
178,000 jobs in November 2016.
So, better than last year but not as many as the year before that.
The careful partisan makes certain to reference the manufacturing job gains under Trump in terms of sheer numbers and not as a percentage increase. Thus what might not be a "best ever" in terms of % gain can still be touted as a "best EVER!" in terms of raw numbers. Thank you population growth.

quote:there's no denying that the cbo and the wh monkeyed with obama's numbers. it's also undeniable that obama was one of the 4 worst economic presidents ever, not posting even 1 quarter of 3% gdp growth. so my point is, is that number you cited genuine? no. trump's number considered in context is clearly believable and indicative of genuine growth. and i'm pretty sure you knew all this but are just being partisan

I suppose I’m glad he’s following up on his promises though, but this really only helps people holding manufacturing jobs who are unable to transfer their skills or learn new ones ... it doesn’t help our economy as a whole.
So your premise is that no one acquires skills in manufacturing jobs?
