Are you supposed to tip Christmas carolers?

A youth group that stopped to sing in front of my house tonight milled around for several minutes after finishing their song. After I said thank you for the 10th time, their director acted like she was annoyed and told the kids to move on to another house where someone would appreciate their singing.

Do you pay people who show up and just start doing things unsolicited? Sounds like a volunteer to me.

Nah, their tip is that I don’t slam the door in their face.

I feel like having carolers would be awkward. I would probably tell them to leave to be honest

I carolled a couple times as a young lad in a church group and we never ever sought payment. The Christmas spirit and joy was the payment.
Plus on one time I was trying to hook up with a cute chick in the group and did. Eta: by hook up I mean date and kiss.

Come out and tell them you captured their singing on your home surveillance system and that you'll save the recording and cherish it forever and you plan to put it on youtube to celebrate their holiday spirit. Then go inside. That way they know you'll have them recorded if they come back to egg the house.

If I knew they were coming I would try to offer hot chocolate and a snack.

I tip them in figgy pudding.

I'm in my mid thirties, and I've never seen a Christmas Caroler in my life. I thought it was just something from the 50s/60s or movies.

I thought about offering them some leftover candy from Halloween, but some of them looked to be on the heavy side.

Just pretend like you aren't home when they show up. Works like a charm.

A crew used to come to my grandparents house every year. She knew when they were coming. She would make hot chocolate and coffee for them.

if she's hot, she could get the tip, but the tip only. otherwise, no tipping.

I just give them eggs.
